Frustrating experience thus far

Middle School Teacher "Myst", Amazon
31 March 2013
  • Summary: First this did not work as indicated and I could not download cache info. I decided to try updating the GPS operating software and that did the trick. Now it is burning through batteries in less than a day as the auto shut-off feature doesn't seem to be working. This does not seem to be a common issue as I am not seeing it on comment boards. After burning through 3 sets of batteries in 3 days I will be returning it and trying a replacement.

Had to return this

Kristen, Amazon
18 May 2012
  • Summary: I bought this item for the Wild Canyon Games which has a geocaching tournament in Oregon. When I took it to Nike to download the maps they said this is the one device that cannot download the maps because it is made for inner city geocaching. Since that was the event I bought it for I had to return it. It may work well for urban areas but you want to make sure it will work if you are purchasing for a specific event.

Geocaching with this GPS is very frustrating ..

Alberto, Amazon
7 February 2012
  • Summary: This GPS does not take you to the cache! it is very slow to react and the compass does not direct you to the cache..it changes colors and it is hard to know where to go! I gave it 2 stars, since it does download the information very fast from the geocaching.com page and it has all the information for paperless caching

  • Summary: This was not Walmart's problem. I should be able to down load geocaching info from the geocaching.com web site, and load it into the GPS. After 10 days of trying, I had to give up. Software at the web site, software for my computer and software in the GPS all lack instructions and don't appear to get along with each other. I finally returned the GPS to our local Walmart with no problems.

Magellan eXplorist GC

SpatMac, Amazon
20 November 2011
  • Summary: Bought this for my geocaching obsessed wife. She got better results with her smart phone app. Why have a stand alone gps if it can't do the job any better than the phone app?

Rolling the dice with this GPS

JakeBP, Amazon
25 October 2011
  • Summary: We bought this GPS for geocaching and were hoping for the best. Unfortunately the worse came true. We read the reviews and product seemed excellent and had all what we wanted for a reasonable price. The only bad reviews about seem to be from people who just got bad units so we decided to roll the dice and hope we would get a working machine. Unfortunately we got a bad unit. The screen would just show lines and a big white splotch.

  • Summary: This is my first GPS device, so maybe my expectations were too high. For a device dedicated solely to geocaching, the Magellan Explorist GC has plenty of handy features, assuming you have a premium membership to the geocaching website so you can take advantage of them. My only complaint is its lack of accuracy around or under even light leaf cover.

Buyer Beware!

Pobo, Amazon
28 July 2011
  • Summary: I think this would be a pretty good GPS unit if it worked. I think the people who've written good reviews have likely not had to deal with Magellan support. The unit I bought would not take a firmware update. After a week of back and forth via phone and e-mail, they offered to replace it. They took my credit card information for a cross-ship, and even though the bad unit has been received by them, they still have not shipped my replacement.
