Summary: I purchased this item because it was "out of the box"--just plug and go. That hasn't happened. I have not been able to download any geocaches from the website. I get a message that I'm missing some program but there is no information on where to get the program. The Magellan website is not helpful. I've had the item since Christmas and its not been used. If you are very computer savvy maybe you will be able to figure out what to do. The rest of us just get frustrated.
Summary: Do not ever buy a product from Magellan. They do not stand behind their warranty. I had a Magellan eXplorist GC for six months when it just stopped working. Over four days with Customer Service they final told me that since I purchased it new from a non retail store that they would not honor the warranty. Customer Service will run you in circles with requests that make no sense, take hours to complete, and that have nothing to do with the problem.
Summary: Straight from the box, put in batteries and powered up. All I got was a lit-up Magellan TM !!!!! Oh yeah, and the power switch will not turn it off either!!!! I bought this item because of the positive reviews - very bad idea. Free advice, buy from Amazon only if the worst review is not too bad for you. It is not beyond imagination that the sales people are writing those glorius reviews. I am on my way to UPS to return the GPS unit for a replacement unit.
Summary: I will update this review once I get a replacement unit. I bought this for my son's 17th birthday. He opened it in front of his friends and was so excited. We planned a surprise geocaching party. We put the batteries in and no power. Another set of batteries, still nothing. one more - nada. We gave up and went geocaching with the app on my phone. Magellan customer service has been terrible.
Summary: This little gadget looks so cool and I was really excited for my son to open it on Christmas morning. I had it all planned out..he would open it, love it, and we would skip around town on Christmas day geocaching. THIS IS NOT AT ALL WHAT HAPPENED. He was very excited when he opened it and was even more excited to go find one. So we hooked it up to our Mac and spent a few hours trying to download GC near us.
Summary: I have owned many GPS units over the years (long before people got picky about adding the "r" on the end). My original Magellan would get me within a foot of a cache, anywhere-even under heavy tree cover. My Garmin eTrex Legend H did the same. My GPSMap 60cs is almost as good, though has more problems with tree cover. This eXplorist can't even get close.
I could not get this unit to work. Apple users beware.
5 December 2012
Summary: The screen froze when I first turned the unit on and I had to call the HELP LINE to get it to work(press reset for 3 to 5 seconds). I could not get the GC to work with my Apple iMAC and I believe it's PC only if you want to download pocket querries. Try as I might, I was not able to download caches from the Internet. In the week or two I had the unit, I was only able to down load one cache. I don't know how I did it and I could not repete it.
Summary: I just purchased the Magellan eXplorist GC and so far I am very frustrated. I could not upload any geocaches from geocaching.com - when I tried again, the site said they were already on there, but I couldn't locate them - sorting through the caches does not let you sort for "recently uploaded" or or some such indicator and there are a lot of pre-loaded caches on there mucking up a search.
