Summary: I gave it three stars, just because you have to give it a ranking. Sadly, I never got to use it to really know if it was any good or not. When I first opened the package, I put the batteries in and started to do the setup. However, it was running really slowly, so I decided to check to make sure that the batteries were OK. When I tried to close the batter compartment door, the very tiny pin that holds the battery door to the unit came off.
Summary: rugged and water proof. Just don't keep it in a pocket near your thigh. I had just got done surveying and stuck it in my cargo, slipped on a log and cracked the screen like a spider web. It would be great if they put a screen protector that latches over it perhaps clear to protect this spendy unit. if purchased I highly recommend a piece of plexiglass and duct tape so you can create a flap to protect it.
Summary: I am writing this as a retired test engineer with a GPS background, so I have time to mess around with my GPS and the experience to understand what I am doing with it. I have owned a Explorist 610 and a 710. My recommendation is that if you are on the fence concerning a outdoor handheld GPS unit you should go with Garmin.
Summary: I have owned this product for more than a year now. I first bought it for a hike on the Pacific Crest Trail because I knew it was not as well marked as the Appalachian Trail. For hiking well known trails like that this unit does very well but I'm guessing others would work equally as well. The biggest reason to buy this is the map sets that come with it.
Loaded with maps and functions but gobbles batteries

Summary: There are a lot of features on the eXplorist 710 GPS and for someone who isn't familiar with all of them, it takes quite a while to grasp everything it can do. The included demo video isn't really a demo, just an advertisement. The quick start manual isn't very helpful at all beyond the absolute basics. The 51 page PDF manual that can be downloaded from Magellan is more helpful but it is designed to show how to find functions you already know you want it to do.
Summary: I am a long-time GPS fan. I have an ancient Magellan SporTrak Map, an Eagle Explorer, a DeLorme PN-40, and four different Garmin GPS units. I like GPS's, can you tell? I obviously don't need another GPS but after attending a presentation about the Magellan eXplorist 710 I really wanted to get one. It seemed like the first GPS in a long time that might equal or beat Garmin. So I bought one!
Summary: GPS, per the actual customer, was totally what was required. However, the customer was under the impression that the GPS came with a rechargeable battery. Other than that inquirey, everything was AOK. Your assistance was appreciated. Respectfully, Mrs.
