Summary: I'm sure this is a really nice unit, but it was too cumbersome for me to use it (I'm pretty technical savy, but not an electronics geek). I wanted a unit that was intuitive to use, and could basically route my hiking tracks to tell me how far I hiked and where the car is at. My biggest complaints about this unit are: 1) when searching for an address to set as a destination, the unit will auto fill fields (which is nice for city names etc, but it will only allow 4 number...
Summary: Should have believed the other reviews. I wanted this for hiking, laying down a track, pan and zoom to features like peaks and creeks for names and positioning on a map. Forget it. 1. screen CANNOT be seen in either sunlight or shade. 2. terrible touch screen, panning is impossible 3. peaks are neither marked or in the data base; no Pikes Peak... really? 4. eats batteries even when OFF!; batteries are dead before you even get to the trailhead 5.
Summary: I have had two other explorists for three or four years now and decided to pick one of these up as a birthday present to myself. As always, my biggest advice is to download the big manual from the website. It amazes me how many people complain about these, but can't answer the simplest questions. Out of the box, these are good, but the customizing you can do make them great. The quick start manual in the box will not tell you how to do these things.
Summary: Compared to apps on my cell phone this device is very complicated. It does, however; work in remote places where my cell phone becomes worthless. The screen is small but it is easier to read in direct sun compared to a cell phone. It seems pretty rugged and if the 300+ dollars to buy it doesn't put you off I say go for it. I have had no previous GPS interaction to campare it with.
Summary: I have owned 3 previous Magellan GPS products with great satisfaction. When I received the product I was disappointed to see the pin that holds the battery cover in place had fallen out and was loose in the GPS unit. I sent the item back and within 5 days I had received a new replacement. I opened the back cover to put the batteries in and the pin fell out on my floor. Two brand new units with the exact same problem.
Best value for the $ and unbelieveably easy to use! ... ignore the unfair reviews

Summary: PROs: Absolutely a breeze, super simple to use and very intuitive. Rugged. Best bang for the buck hands down. Easy to customize the screen with the data you want to see (elevation, distance to destination, etc., up to 5) Works way better than your phone app for tracking or geocaching in adverse conditions (cold, hot, wet) and has longer battery life than the phone when using the app.
