Summary: It's a good unit, small display, but I knew that going in. Good value for the money. It has a lot of features, but I wish figuring our what everything does was easier. Once you have used it 3-5 times for each feature it does get easier.
Summary: Good point: 1. GPS performance is better than Triton. 2. Duration of the active suspend mode 30 hours! (eneloop use) (My Rating. GPS performance of the Normal mode and Active suspend mode is the same. Good.) Bad point: 1. Arrow in the map screen is too big! ("Map, WP, Track" is invisible) 2. Duration of the normal mode 10 hours. (eneloop use) 3. WP in the map screen is too small. 4. Route does not automatically calculate the distance remaining. why?
I like the eXplorist, though I had a problem with this unit

Summary: So I ordered the GPS and was excited to use it. I downloaded the latest software following the instructions and it crashed the unit. I couldn't get it to work at all ... it would boot with an error. Emailed with Magellan tech support and they had me ship the old unit it so they can replace it. I was disappointed that I had to pay for the shipping to return the unit. On the up side, they sent me a new eXplorist 610 so in the end I can't complain too much.
Summary: I use this for geocacaching. Sometimes it gets you dead on and most times within 20 feet or so.Took just a few min to learn how to use. I like the touch screen, easyer to use than the joy stick ones.
Summary: Technically, the unit works great. It works very good under heavy tree cover. I only gave it 4 stars because the display is almost unuseable in outside light. I have to turn the brightness all the way up to see it, even on cloudy days. I wanted to use it on my bike, but can't see it well enough in the sunlight to be of any use for biking. It is great off the bike.
Summary: I'm fairly new to geocaching, but that was the specific application for which I purchased the eXplorist 510. I guess that I shouldn't have been surprised that compared with an iPhone, this is highly accurate. The unit is also very substantial feeling, and compared with using a miniature joystick (as found on Magellan's less expensive models) the touchscreen is a great feature!
Summary: Review: Magellan Explorist 510 Handheld GPS I'll open with the general list of Magellan eXplorist 510 touted features, then touch on how well it works, why the hiker or hunter would want this unit, or not. The primary features follow. ***Preloaded World Edition maps ... include a detailed road network, land areas, transportation points and water features of more than 200 countries. The 2,000 waypoints guide you toward useful and interesting destinations while geocaching.
Summary: I received the Summit Series Explorist 510 and am very happy with it. The description at the top of the page is misleading. You might be under the impression that it comes with ALL 9 regional maps, or at least the US topo maps and it does Not. They should at the least tell you that you will need to go to Magellan to download your maps after you get the GPS.
