Excerpt: I bought the unit a few years ago, when it came out. It was never user-friendly and tech support was nil. I threw it in a drawer and did not use it as I had planned. Now it seems Magellan has abandoned the Explorist line. Even the terrible tech support is gone.

Excerpt: Try as I might, I honestly can not find anything positive to say about the Explorist 500 LE, or Magellan for that matter. My GPS was purchased new in 2009 as a gift from my wife, and has never even made it into to the field. It has had issues from nearly the first day out of the box.
Summary: Good luck... After having several earlier eXplorist models, I decided to purchase two 500LE North America units for my girlfriend and me. It's been two years now and the mediocrity of the product has compelled me to submit this review: Usability is becoming progressively more difficult with each...

Excerpt: Overall I would say that I really like the unit. Ease of use rates high as does accuracy and dependability. I use it for hunting, camping and geocaching. The main problem that I have is with the street level detailed maps (mapsend).
Summary: Flimsy internal battery carrier snapped. Found one on that E site for MUCH less than Magellan would cost. Magellan support offers friendly people who want to help you, no really they do. But wanting to, and actually being able to, are entirely different things.
Summary: Okay, I admit, I'm a geocaching dork. I'm okay with that. So that is my primary use for it...geocaching. The only beef I have with it is that it is SLOW to update. As you are tromping thru the woods or desert or marshlands, whatever, you have to pause a good solid minute or two to allow it to catch...
Summary: I have been using the Magellan eXplorist series for 3 years and have owned several different models. Comparing other units with the same feature set the Magellan eXplorist 500LE is by far the best bang for the buck.
Summary: The Magellan eXplorist 500LE is my first GPS, before I've used only Garmin GPSs. I've decided to purchase a GPS to support my work as an RF Engineer and this GPS does it jobs well. Few things I don't like about this thing, but it's very minor.
Summary: I purchased another 500 because they have been discontinued and they are really good for caching. The color screen is very bright and the unit is straight foward to use. And the Magellan program to download pocket queries is excellent.
