Worthwhile purchase if the price is right.

  • Summary: In it's day, it was a great little hand-held GPS unit. It helped me actually manage to navigate Washington DC to be able to find the National Mall. It should have an adapter that allows it to be used with 3 AAA batteries and a USB data/power cable set. It is capable of holding at least up to 8Gb (just tried it just now...) of map data in an internally held SDHC card- which should cover most of CONUS with few issues. Buyer, however, beware.

  • Summary: I could not get it to work from day one. Unit contains no map is all I can get out of it. And now it ruin two weekends of riding for me. I'm not happy with this unit and I don't know if it's the product itself or just the one I got.

  • Summary: I bought the unit a few years ago, when it came out. It was never user-friendly and tech support was nil. I threw it in a drawer and did not use it as I had planned. Now it seems Magellan has abandoned the Explorist line. Even the terrible tech support is gone. Run away from Magellan as fast as you can.

Magellan explorist 500 le GPS

herb6146, Ebay
7 February 2011
  • Summary: I wanted an inexpensive Topo GPS. One must purchase ToPo disks. I was not able to find useful downloadable maps on the web. They may be there, but I'm not that computer literate. After some stumbeling around, I was able to get the maps that I needed onto the memory chip. I had to do this with a card reader since my windows xp computer would not recoganize the GPS. The process might be easier if you have facility with computers.

Try as I might, I honestly can not find anything positive…

OpsChief, Trailspace.com

  • Summary: Try as I might, I honestly can not find anything positive to say about the Explorist 500 LE, or Magellan for that matter. My GPS was purchased new in 2009 as a gift from my wife, and has never even made it into to the field. It has had issues from nearly the first day out of the box. Magellan tech support has been wholly ineffectual.
