Excerpt: I bought the unit a few years ago, when it came out. It was never user-friendly and tech support was nil. I threw it in a drawer and did not use it as I had planned. Now it seems Magellan has abandoned the Explorist line. Even the terrible tech support is gone.

Excerpt: Try as I might, I honestly can not find anything positive to say about the Explorist 500 LE, or Magellan for that matter. My GPS was purchased new in 2009 as a gift from my wife, and has never even made it into to the field. It has had issues from nearly the first day out of the box.

Excerpt: Overall I would say that I really like the unit. Ease of use rates high as does accuracy and dependability. I use it for hunting, camping and geocaching. The main problem that I have is with the street level detailed maps (mapsend).
Summary: This is my 1st GPS and bought from Costco for [...]. I figured if its as bad as they say I can return it. First off, the entire connection to the USB port is a non-issue once you figure out that the moron that developed it put tabs on the plug that lead you to install it upside down.
Summary: I purchased another 500 because they have been discontinued and they are really good for caching. The color screen is very bright and the unit is straight foward to use. And the Magellan program to download pocket queries is excellent.
Summary: I have absolutely no problems with the actual device. It's my first GPS and I had pretty much figured it all out in the first few days. What I do have problems with is the difficulty of the software.
Summary: I rec'd an Explorist 500 LE for Xmas. Right off the bat I've been pretty thrilled with it. It does its job great! Its fairly intuitive and easy to use. Accuracy is amazing! BUT... 1) Its a battery hog. 3 Alkaline AAA's last about 6 hours. 8 hours with lights and alarms off.
Summary: Extremely pleased with this GPS. I use it for boating along Florida coast as well as for GeoCaching ([...] if you don't know what that is). Li-Ion battery last almost all day when in sunlight when back lighting isn't needed. Consistantly get 10' WAAS accuracy.
Summary: I purchased this unit from REI. They always stand behind their products. Thanks goodness! If you read a couple of the other reviews you'll see... SD Card door broke off, battery hard to remove, downloading cache info is difficult and transfers with limited info. Been there, done that!
Summary: I have been using the Magellan eXplorist series for 3 years and have owned several different models. Comparing other units with the same feature set the Magellan eXplorist 500LE is by far the best bang for the buck.
