Many design flaws but basically reliable.

Rob, Amazon

  • Summary: I bought this back in early 2007 and have used it for hiking, driving, flying and just finding my way around when I visit new places. I also use the track log a lot to see where I've been. Pros: - Generally very reliable. Never had it crash on me. - Battery lasts a long time. I've done a whole day's snowboarding and it's still going strong at the end of the day. - User interface is reasonably easy to understand - Easy interface with PC. Looks like a disk drive.

Magellan Explorist 500

WildmanJohn, Amazon

  • Summary: Like many others, I find the manual instructions are useless. Positive comments: I like the saved route function that can be played back for review in color code for the different travelling speeds. Or maybe I'm impressed easily. NEGATIVE COMMENT: waterproof NOT! Already had to replace the battery due to the cover does not remain sealed. I suspect the lid is not stiff enough to retain its shape. You can press the lid down when the one and only screw is tightly secured.

  • Summary: Explorist has easy to use menus, but I have not yet learned how to install the mapping software that I got for it.I can get the maps from the computer to the SD card but can not get the Explorist to read the SD car.So for now all I have is the plain background map that comes installed from the fractory.

Magellan support doesn't exist

Eileen B "imcaver", Amazon
13 November 2007
  • Summary: I purchased a new Explorist 500 in August 2006. It works fine although doesn't seem to lock onto satellites as quickly as Garmin GPS. I have on occasion tried to get through to their support both in email and on the phone and I don't think Magellan support exists. When I had to buy a new home computer and it came with Windows Vista, I received a canned reply from Magellan that said basically I was out of luck that there is no way the Explorist 500 will talk to Windows...

  • Summary: Definitely not user friendly. Took a while to figure out how to use it. The battery life is not long. Does not come with a rechargeable battery, but does have the option to use one. My opinion is that they should sell it with the component.

For Cyclists: Solid and reliable - software could be better

Amazon Customer, Amazon
22 April 2007
  • Summary: MY EXPERIENCE: I used the Magellan eXplorist 500 on a 400 mile bicycle trip from Baltimore to Central New York, and I've also used it on a 150 mile ride across Flordia, and several shorter rides. THE GOOD: The screen is easy to read, the maps accurate, and the user interface easy to use while cycling. The unit is remarkably accurate, locks onto the sattelites very quickly (often within seconds).

Great product, lousy company

cameraman650, Ebay

  • Summary: As you may have read from all the other reviews on the product, it is a good product. The only problem is the lousy support and sales department. I purchased my unit online and did not realize that it does not have the street maps. I had to figure out how to purchase it online vs. store. I found the wrong version on amazon.com and did not buy.

High quality but limited

Bryan MacKinnon, Amazon
21 August 2005
  • Summary: While Thales Magellan GPS's have some quality attributes, there are enough frustrating features with the Explorist series that I cannot really recommend these products. 1) Any GPS receiver with map capabilities should have the ability to download your own maps and calibrate them; built-in, the Explorist has neither of these features.
