The battery it came with was dead on arrival. ...

Chuck McMahon, Amazon
4 March 2015
  • Summary: The battery it came with was dead on arrival. The unit would not operate. The seller refunded my money, thank you seller. I did buy another battery for it and it worked briefly. The problem with this unit was that it overcharged the battery to an extremely overheated condition.

Terry L. Rasmussen "Terry", Amazon
26 November 2007
  • Summary: I really wanted to like this unit. The graphics were nice, features were nice, my family had a lot of fun with it at first. Then the memory went out on it and I called Magellan (long wait time) and they said to send it in.

Magellan GPS Products - Customer Beware

C. Maillie, Amazon
1 November 2007
  • Summary: Megellans "customer service" is by far the worst we have experienced. Based on our experience, it appears that Magellan's customer service tactic is to put the customer on hold for long periods hoping that they will hang up, always making the customer call back, never agreeing to follow up with a...

Magellan eXplorist 500 GPS Receiver - not impressed

boyracernj, Ebay
6 July 2007
  • Summary: Magellan eXplorist 500 GPS Receiver - not impressed. The software which I spent an extra $100 for detailed USA road maps is awful. The worst interface I've ever experienced. Takes longer time trying to put together directions to drive an hour away than it takes to actually get there.

Unreliable; customer "service" a joke

Flat Six, Amazon
16 April 2007
  • Summary: Unreliable pile of 'you-know-what'. Worked fine for about 2 months then refused to power up. Fresh batteries, no go. Called customer "service". Outsourced call center to India; rep followed generic script telling me to: 1) use lithium-ion batteries, and 2) press "power + NAV" simultaneously.

Worst Customer Support on the Planet

Richard W. Taylor "vorticity", Amazon
27 March 2007
  • Summary: My GPS is an eXplorist XL. I assume the guts are the same, so here goes. I cannot begin to express how disappointed I am with this Magellan GPS. I have been an exclusive Magellan user since 1999, but am now officially fed up. Customer Support: Lack of.

Slower and full of problems!

A. P. Rockwood "Eye poker", Amazon
21 January 2007
  • Summary: I had the sportrak color for about a year and loved it before I lost it. I got the Explorist 500 as a replacement. At first, I didn't like it because they took away alot of the menus and I was afraid of having a proprietary rechargeable battery.
