Oregon 300 problems

mike s, Amazon
21 July 2010
  • Summary: I have a Rhino 530 and decided to go to the Oregon 300 for the larger screen and a couple other features. Big mistake! The screen is totally not readable in cold weather! I have used it about 10 times when the tempters have been between 25 and 5 degrees F and the screen just disappears. Also there have been software problems. I was not able to view more than one track at a time on the screen. I was instructed to update the software and that has created more problems.

Superb hardware shadowed by software nightmare

John Muir "John Muir", Amazon

  • Summary: HARDWARE Oregon series feels sturdy yet light. It is a beautiful device from a hardware standpoint. SOFTWARE We expect a modern GPS to do more than provide GPS or UTM coordinates. In 2010, there is a high expectation of convenient map management. Unfortunately, despite years of user criticism on numerous websites, the company still fails to improve its portfolio of applications to install (MapInstall and MapManager), navigate topographic maps (BaseCamp), route planning...

Just not anywhere near as good as it sounds

M. Conley "dj macka", Amazon

  • Summary: I actually had bought a Garmin gpsmap 60csx a few years ago (2007) but unfortunately had to return it because I was unable to use it with my macbook pro (i.e couldn't upload maps to the unit). Fast forward to 2009 when Garmin finally has the mac compatibility thing sorted out, it was time to revisit which model was best for me. Mainly, I wanted to use it for my car as well as camping/backpacking.

Not worth the money.

Amazon Customer, Amazon
15 June 2009
  • Summary: After using my trusty old Garmin Venture unit for over ten years, mainly for geocaching, I thought I'd upgrade to the all singing, all dancing, Oregon 300. Used it over the weekend for a few caches and didn't like it one bit. Although the unit's accuracy and speed of satellite acquisition is excellent and far superior to the Venture's, I found the touch screen unresponsive and a little on the delicate side.
