Summary: Potential 885T purchasers beware! I have been using Garmin GPS products for many years, including mobile and marine units, and still believe Garmin to be the best provider of GPS for most consumers. When I purchased the 885T unit, I had high expectations. The unit functions well, as I expected, but has some drawbacks. The unit will occasionally lose functionality, for example, the touch screen will stop functioning.
Summary: The first unit was shipped missing accessories and Amazon rushed a replacement unit(Kudos to Amazon). The "Free" update took 4 aborted attempts and then 2.5 hours to download on a T1 line. Minimum hold time for Customer Support was 45 minutes. After 2 weeks of use, the center of the screen is blank from "dead pixels". Calls to Customer Support for a "RMA" had 1+hour hold times (never got through, disconnected).
Summary: The "gadgety" things on this unit are great but the main things you need on a regular basis are not so good. 1) It freezes up fairly often and then you have to totally turn the unit off and start all over again. 2) Speaker volume is TERRIBLE, the radio must be off, the windows must be closed and you can't be on the phone or else you cannot hear. It's especially bad with using the speakerphone.
Summary: This is a waste of money. Many of the features perform poorly for unit this price. I travel a lot, and have owned other Garmins that performed awesome. It's sad that this one is so bad. Here are some highlighted features: Basic Navigation - It works well in open areas, but losses the signal in any city area (standard for this technology). Pedestrian mode is absolutely useless. Ultra slow at find the satellite signal. Slow calculation of routes.
Cons: Don't buy this if you think you will get real-time traffic data. The "traffic" feature is only on MSN Direct. I felt stupid when my new GPS arrived and it didn't have the FM Traffic cable, which I was expecting, but this MSN Direct cable instead.
Summary: I preordered this for $700. I have had it a little over a month, and it works great. If you want fun voices and vehicles, Garmin.com has some for free. Now enough with the OK, on to the bad... The problem is it has almost no points of interest. My cheap 5 year old Garmin has tons of POIs, but this doesn't even have a fraction. Why did I pay all that money for a great GPS if it can't find the places I want to go?
