  • Pros: Cheap, powered mounting bracket, good satellite reception...
  • Cons: Poorly written software, the battery drains in stand-by mode, no way to force the device to turn off without taking out the battery, does not display street names in the most detailed view, when driving without destination selected the device displays the street you are driving on at the top of the screen instead of the intersection that you are approaching...

  • Summary: I am a fan of Garmin and really wanted the 855 to work as well as advertised. In particular, I picked the 855 because of two features - voice via FM radio and speech recognition (vs typing in commands). Although I admit that I did read in one review that the FM radio voice directions would NOT work well in a car with a REAR MOUNTED antenna, I went ahead and ordered it anyway. Well, the previous review was correct. My radio antenna was too far away.

  • Summary: This garmin had a short and painful life with us. It was speaking Ukranian when we started it (though we didn't know even that at the time. We simply knew it was not a roman alphabet and lookedlike an eastern block language)--with no instructions on how to change that. Our other garmin's layout was different, so we couldn't use that as a model. We couldn't fix it until we called someone, who pulled the instructions up on the internet and read them to us. Ridiculous.

Decent, not the best.

Brian Y., Newegg

  • Summary: So I've had this unit for a couple of months now. I love Garmin as they are easy to use and navigate around the menus, etc. This unit is no different. HOWEVER... the extra features I bought this unit for aren't as great as I anticipated. The voice activation feature takes some getting used to... after that I'd say it's DECENT at best. My main gripe is that it works pretty slowly. It's usually pretty good at recognizing city names, street names, etc.
  • Pros: * Easy to use * Clear maps * Voice activation feature recognizes several commands. * Voice activation feature is great for routing while driving. * Usually good at finding points of interest, gas stations, etc. * MP3 sound quality is decent.
  • Cons: * Locks up randomly, must do battery pull. * Voice activation feature is slow. * MP3 menu really hard to navigate around. * No free traffic.

solution for battery draining problem

The Rarely Reviewer, Amazon

  • Summary: So far (knock knock) I've had fewer problems than most of the negative reviews seem to report. There are a number of things I DON'T like about it compared to my trusty old Nuvi 360 - for example the newer units don't show you the names of all the upcoming streets but DO tell you the one you're driving on .... mile after mile ..... - BUT I have discovered what seems to be a solution to the "battery draining when it's turned off" problem.

Woldnt buy again

Walter M., Newegg

  • Summary: This unit has a good feature set and navigates well. However, it has a tendency to randomnly lock up. The only way to cure this is to remove the battery (fortunately it has a removeable battery). As another user stated, this is very annoying when it locks up while driving. Trying to remove and reinstall the battery while driving is um, rather difficult. I also bought this to use it as an MP3 player via the FM transmitter.
  • Pros: Navigates well, good feature set, MP3 and FM transmitter built in. Removeable/replaceable battery. Can auto sort routes.
  • Cons: Locks up all the time. Poor MP3 handling.

Voice recgonition not useable while driving

Sarah N. Peters, Amazon
24 March 2010
  • Summary: I purchased the 855 to use in my delivery-based rental business which takes me all over the city every day. I finally decided to upgrade from a Tom Tom One XLS to the Nuvi 855 because of it's voice recognition feature. From a safety point of view, most of us don't park the car to type in an address. We do it while we're driving on the freeway and decide we want to find a restaurant or something else on the way.

  • Summary: It would be nice to have Garmin build a working Novi with all the bells and whistles, and have it on the market for more than a couple of months before it is on their obsolete list ~!~ I hope this is of some help to you . . .
  • Pros: When it works it is great ! I like the easier input of addresses ( both alpha & numeric) ! over the older models. . .
  • Cons: It does not have a truck route selection as does my old 660 model did, so I have to watch where it directs me to go with my RV on non truck routes. It also freezes up quite often and requires the removal of the battery and reinstall it to get it to run again, and that is not so easy when your in traffic and on a multi-lane highway going 65 mph. It also will show you should go right and tell you to go left~!~
