With voice activation inclusion and the additional features such as MP3 Player, the Nuvi 855 slots into a higher price category. These features are useful if your GPS is in constant operation, becoming the central point for your in-car needs. For a busy sales person or regular traveler, the Nuvi 855 will be a useful companion that extends beyond just helping you get around. Read more
The volume could be better. Lot of disturbances when connected to radio speakers and the sliding on/off switch on the top is not user friendly. The directions are great. Good response time. Garmin customer service is bad. waiting time is around 30min every time to get a response. Amazon service is good. Read more
Seems to take time to acquire satellites, but not terribly long. Once acquired, works well. Easy to see, easy to use, accurate and simple menus. Read more
I am in sales so i use this all the time in the car. Without my former google maps on my phone i was always lost but constantly in danger of accidents using a handheld device to navigate. This unit is awesome, the voice activation is surprisingly great and the ability to follow both with the speach and also when it's on mute is fabulous. This is the best GPS unit i've used or have seen used from friends. Highly reccommend this to anyone looking for help with navigation. Read more
I got this unit a couple of days ago. The unit did a firmware update then a free map update with no problems. The voice command works well and the 4.3" screen is a step up from my nuvi 260's. As of today no lockups, no power or shut off\down problems. Too date it has worked well. I have not used the media player, viewer, currency converter etc. and unless really desperate I will not. Did the writer Rick Broida even use this model? I am so irritated right now that I jumped on the $98 offer. The manual clearly states receiver is included in the 865 package and is an OPTIONAL accessory for the nuvi 855. The caption from the CNET article says "The Garmin Nuvi 855 GPS offers some nifty bells and whistles, including voice recognition and an FM transmitter. Read more
I was torn between the Garmin nuvi 755 with lane assist or the 855 with voice control. I chose the 855 with voice control option. Sometimes it is not convenient to stop and change or find a new address. This unit allows you to do that without taking your hands off the steering wheel. I do like that it displays your current speed, posted speed limits, and projected arrival time to your destination. Also marks your location when removed from the vehicle. Read more or see product

I like the Garmin very much. It does all it is advertised to do and I find it very easy to operate. I got it for my wife because she isn't good at electronics. She would be unable to program a GPS that you couldn't talk to and tell it where you want it to route your travel. By speaking to this GPS and following on screen prompts she is able to get where she wants to go via the Garmin nuvi 855 GPS. Read more

If you are having problems with volume, you can download the freeware TTS Voice Editor. Go a Google search and you'll find it. It allows you to increase volume and even change the text for text to voice directions. Lots of potential there.

I recently purchaes an 855. Is it worth buying the receiver and the subscription for MSN Direct? Does it work well in the New York/New Jersey area? How does he subscription work - one price for life as advetised??
Answered by Hepotter 2010-03-05:
My understanding is the MSN feature will be discontinued in the next year or so, due to lack of subscriptions. I can't verify this, just something I read on one of the other blogs. Best check to be
