Summary: NUVI 500s have insufficient memory to allow you to update maps. The topo feature is lost if you update the road maps. Don't buy this product and if you own one, don't ever update the maps. My NUVI locked up constantly because the memory is overloaded. Since it is out of warranty, Garmin wanted to charge me $99 to fix something that is their fault. They don't tell you that the lifetime updater will screw up the device. It makes a nice paperweight.
Summary: When I read the spec sheet on this Garmin, it said that this GPS would guide me down Route 66. All it did was get me to Route 66 in Chicago. When I left Chicago I selected the 1st leg of the trip and all this GPS did for the entire 20 days that I was riding Route 66 was try to point me back out to the interstate. It would actually show that I was riding on Route 66 but would try to route me out to the interstate. Should have save the money to pay for gas.
Summary: Garmin has the worst routing algorithm I ever see. No matter how I change the settings (fastest time or shortest distance), it always take the longest route you can image. It over penalize left turn. For example, to go to my house, in a no traffic light neighborhood, I'll turn L on 1st T, then L on 2nd T and straight to my house. Garmin will tell me to go R on 1st T, making a big circle aroud to reach the 2nd T. Same thing for going to my son's afterschool.
Was A Good Idea BEFORE Google Maps...bye bye Garmin!

Summary: Like the title states, was a worthy product before but is now irrelevant and very, due to Android's operating system a.k.a any "Google Phone"! The Garmin Nuvi 500's... ...Pros: - it has 4 GPS modes: walking, biking, boating, and driving - it is water RESISTANT - text to speech Cons: - no lanyard - map updates are not free - no bike routes - traffic not included If you are looking at any GPS, I recommend any Android phone; I haven't used my Garmin 500 since!
Summary: This GPS works as well as any other Nuvi product for auto navigation. As a matter of fact, it works great for auto navigation in my experience. However, this unit is billed as a crossover GPS that is also suitable for marine, geocaching, hiking, and other outdoor use, and it falls well short in all these categories. Pros: - Works great for auto navigation.
Summary: doesnt work . broken i havent been able to use it . Doesnt let me type in a dirction . I took it to Radioshack and best buy but the could'nt do anything , they said that its doesnt work property i want to see if they coulnd sent me a new one.
Summary: I based my one star rating on extremely poor customer service and the fact that the Nuvi 500 is NOT updated for 2008-2009. When I called to ask for the update I was told due to the topo and other map features on the Nuvi 500 there is no update yet. The best part was when the customer "service" rep asked me why didn't I get the 550? I was directed to a more senior rep's answering machine. Of course I have received no return phone calls, nor return email.
Summary: I just got a nuvi 500 and I would never buy another Garmin product. Garmin doesn't include an owner's manual- you have to download one. To register the product you have to go to Garmin and download a plug-in to your browser. The downloaded manual sucks. They don't include an AC adapter. As if you didn't pay enough already, they are happy to sell you one.
WARNING Don't listen to the 5 star rating on this product

Summary: The 5 star reviews on this product are paid shills . The 5 star reviews were written and posted by the Garmin company. I travel the world frequently and use a GPS wherever I go and I recently purchased one of these units along with a European map to save money on a rental GPS when I rent a car. The problem is, that I had to rent a GPS anyway because Garmin Maps are worthless in Europe. Believe me when I tell you, that the Garmin was no help whatsoever.
"organizing multiple waypoints cause drops or duplicates"
4 April 2009
Pros: can be used for geocaching and hiking. Great contour lines
Cons: Organizing multiple waypoints causes drops and duplicates. If you make changes in waypoints, you might end up with duplicates and others deleted. Garmen can duplicate problem, and has not resolved problem. (2months)
