Summary: It was going to be quite a bit to update my maps on my old Garwin. So I started to look for alternatives and this model had everything I wanted. We took it for this years vacation circling Lake Superior. In parts of Canada the population density is very low, and yet the maps knew every nook and cranny. After I read the manual, I was able to do everything that I was used to in the old Garmin. Just different menus and new ways to access the menus.
Summary: If you don't update the maps, this unit may work for you. But, part of buying a unit with Lifetime maps is updating maps. I downloaded Garmin Express to my Windows 7 system, made sure it was the latest version, and then plugged in my nuvi. When it had finished updating per Garmin Express, I disconnected my unit, put it in the car, and turned it on. Imagine my surprise when it said the detailed maps were missing.
Summary: Our phone charges us insane data roaming in Canada, so it's useless as a GPS. This unit is not useless however, so it's indispensable when travelling in CA. We bought this unit to replace our Nuvi 650 because the battery on the latter died. I ordered a battery replacement kit for the Nuvi online, but Garmin products internally are extremely flimsy, so the unit did not survive disassembly.
Summary: Just got home from a trip to and through the the Denver Co area with lots of confusing roads. This garmin nuvi 44lm worked well in almost all situations with the exception of a couple of times when it couldn't seem to load information quickly enough. BUT, we would have been completely lost and frustrated had we not had it with us. I would purchase again and I would recommend to a friend.
I Swear At The British Lady Inside of This A Lot Less Than I Swore at The Lady Inside My Old GPS
13 June 2014
Summary: My wife sets our GPS to be a mellow British lady's voice in order to calm my intense road rage. But the lady in the TomTom I used to have would instruct me to make so many misguided turns I would continuously curse her like a drunken pirate. But the lady in this Garmin seems knowledgable and has yet to give me moronic directions. So I swear at her less. Her boot-up time is wicked short too, greatly appreciated.
Summary: Overall, it works fine most of the time and I love the lifetime map update feature. However, there are several issues that contribute to the 3-star rating: 1. The charger is weird. When you start your car AFTER the GPS is already plugged in, the unit doesn't charge from the car and just uses its battery. You have to plug it in after starting the car to start the charging.
Summary: I used this product while travelling on vacation. It worked great and was an absolute necessity for areas that I was not familiar with. The battery life was a bit disappointing as I had to keep connecting the charger toward the end of my trips. As I used it on vacation, I wish there was a custom storage case to pack the unit as well as the accessories when travelling. If I had to get another unit in the future, I would get the larger screen units for ease of use.
