Garmin Nuvi 42LM – Review

Review guidelines
30 October 2013
  • Summary: The Garmin Nuvi 42LM is not the top of Garmin navigators but is in all respects a good compromise between quality and price. The device has, in fact the most useful features, such as lane guidance with the junctions, voice commands, an indication of speed cameras and speed limits, but above all the free upgrade to the life of the mapping, all at a price very affordable.
  • Pros: On-board computer, Camera display, Free map updates forever, Vista junctions, Indication speed limits, Voice commands.
  • Cons: No pedestrian navigation, No Traffic Information Display resolution, No Bluetooth, No EcoRoute, No myTrends.

  • Conclusion: If you don't care about a lot of fancy frills, the Garmin nuvi 42 is the car GPS for you. It navigates reliably, speaks directions aloud and even includes lane assist (to hold your hand through tricky interchanges) -- yet it's still one of the cheapest GPS navigators you can buy. Consider step-up models with free map updates, though.
  • Pros: Speedy, accurate navigation, Easy touch-screen operation, Includes lane assist with junction view
  • Cons: Map updates cost extra, Not traffic-compatible, No voice recognition

GPS Tracklog
1 April 2013
  • Excerpt: The Garmin nuvi 42 is one of the company’s 2013 Essential series models, their entry-level line. Even so, this 4.3″ navigator is quite capable, and features speed limit display, junction view and lane assist — things that were relegated to top-of-the-line models not too long ago. The nuvi 42 comes with preloaded maps of the entire US except Alaska and is a great choice for someone who needs a basic navigator without all the bells and whistles.

  • Cons: No navigazione pedonale; Risoluzione display; No Bluetooth; No EcoRoute; No myTrends; No informazioni sul traffico
