Summary: Took it out of the box, plugged it in, it fired up right away and was ready for use with minimal set-up! THE FOLLOWING IS AN EDITED REVIEW: To make a long story short, after the initial two days of use, I downloaded new maps and updated software - - since then, nothing but nightmares! Unit does not work properly, been working with Garmin for over a MONTH now - - had to buy a new (refurbished) power/FM cord to avoid wait while old cord sent in/new cord sent.
Good Graphics and Form Factor but Engineering Issues
20 April 2011
Summary: I bought this unit from Amazon. They did a great job of packaging it and sending in a timely manner. The GPS unit is very nice looking, indeed. The unit is very slippery and too thin to handle. With this said, the unit can easily slip right out of your hands if you are not careful. The graphics is fantastic, just like my Google Nexus One phone. Problems: 1.
Summary: First, I have to tell you that I have had a Garmin 2720 Street Pilot that I bought several years ago when that unit first came out. The Street Pilot 2720 performed flawlessly for the entier time I had it so I I had high expectations for the nuvi 3790T. Well, so far I am on my second unit and I really want to get rid of it for a number of reasons. Here is my story. I bought the first unit through Amazon because the 3790T was not yet available in stores.
Summary: I've been using Nuvis for years. Was very excited to get the new form factor Nuvi so I could give my well-worn 765 to my graduating daughter. Received my fancy new device and put it directly into service on a trip to NYC--my first time there after all these years of exploring the rest of the country.
450 Dollars plus the coast of lifetime update and i get adds every time i come to a stop
11 November 2010
Summary: this is a compleate rip off i thought i was buying top of the line GPS unit, but no every time i come to a stop they shoot adds at my map.If I want to get rid of it I have to buy a new cable for life time trafic update. On the website of Garmin they talk about life time trafic, but not a word about adds ge I wonder why??
Summary: While I can certainly appreciate another person's opinion (review), but for me -- the purchase of my 3790T has been anything but pleasant. Its slim-trim look is something to marvel over, however wait until you have to deal with the 2 to 3 mile time gap which it takes for the unit to sync with a satellite for directions. I previously owned a Nuvi 750T -- this unit always synced within seconds after fire-up from the same location that I use with my 3790T.
Summary: I have had major issues with the 3790T, its pretty and worked well and all of a sudden would recalcualte, then the maps would disappear but the voice directions would continue. After many calls to service and doing everything they said it just quit totally. It was replaced within 30 days of purchase. I used it for the first time this past weekend. Several hours into the trip the map disappeared again. Voice directions continued. When I touched the unit it was very hot.
DISHONEST ADVERTISING - DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY!!!!!!!!
24 September 2010
Summary: Junction View does not work. I called and spoke to Garmin as this function is "supposed" to work out of the box on the 3790T. They claim it has NOT been implemented extensively across North America and if you want it, you will either need to pay $100 for lifetime map updates or purchase individual updates when it has been implemented. After spending $500 for this unit, I'm NOT giving you a penny more!!
Summary: Awesome looking unit, maps are pretty, and functionality is great. Used it in the northwest US and all the way up to Calgary. It said to turn about 1/4mi from where an actual turn was, but it was a remote part of Canada, so I wasn't very upset about that. The real problem is that it tended to run extremely hot which had me wondering about longevity from the get-go...then got my answer in less than two weeks when it died.
Summary: While the general experience with the product is good the maps are severely out of date, not accurately depicting roads that were completed more than an year ago. This was found after the maps had been updated to the latest ones provided by Garmin as of 8/31/10. These roads were accurately represented by Google Maps and the Navteq maps on my Sprint Navigation (phone based).
