Tack at least $50 extra on this one

Anonymous, Newegg
30 July 2011
  • Pros: So far everything looks good and easy to use.
  • Cons: Preloaded maps very outdated and Garmin charges you $50 for a one time update, and also offers a lifetime for $80 something. This is my first GPS, but in my opinion the first update should be free, period. A GPS with out of date maps is worthless, so basically add $50 on top of the price automatically. Not happy about that at all.

Chase M., Newegg
24 June 2011
  • Summary: Just an example: I'm new in town and the other day I was going to a restaurant that I was pretty sure was just streight down this main road on the right. Since I'm new though I put in the address it took me off of the main road through a neighborhood in the opposite direction, out to another road then around back to the main road and back to the restaurant.
  • Pros: Price on sale was good. Screen Size is large enough so that everything is easily visible but its not distracting.
  • Cons: quite inaccurate at times. Usually takes the most indirect route. Even with freshly updated maps they aren't completely up to date.

Speaker unacceptable

Lnd Svyr, Amazon
7 April 2011
  • Summary: Echoing others. The speaker is distorted, at least at 70% and up and you can't hear the unit at less than 100% with the windows open. Wife's 5 year old nuvi sounds much better and actually being smaller is better suited to tuck up in windshield corner versus friction mount on dash with the bundle. So, I'll spend the same or more to get smaller unit without bundle but at least won't offend the ear. May work for some.

poor battery working time per charge

Carlos Lederman, Amazon
2 August 2010
  • Summary: This is my first gps. Easy to use. Works fine. The only problem, I consider big, is that the battery does not allow a trip of more than 2 hours, and having to use it connected to the car outlet is not what I was looking for. The gps summary advertise for "Key Features/Benefits for all 2x5 Series Navigators" says "Rechargeable lithium-ion battery for easy portability (up to 4 hours per charge)"; this not true.

  • Summary: This is my second Garmin product and the display brightness is very poor to where I can hardly see it during daylight hours. The brightness is set to 100% but my first Garmin GPS was MUCH brighter so I'm assuming something is wrong and I'll try to exchange it when I return from vacation.

Garmin 255w Falling short.

anubisthanatos, Ebay
19 July 2010
  • Summary: I picked up this Garmin 255W as it has high ratings across the Web and is a recommended unit for the price. Now I know some units feature this and that and so forth, and that this unit is more of an entry level unit with missing bells and whistles. The sound is not 100% clear... Who cares. It doesnt have Blue tooth.. Meh.. You can't talk to it to enter routes... Pfftt.. using it as an electronic map is almost impossible.... Wait what..?

Garmin Nuvi 255W

Michael C., Newegg
2 July 2010
  • Summary: - Basically, the 255W is essentially the SAME as the 265WT Except that the 255W lacks the following: Bluetooth (does anyone really use this feature?), lifetime traffic details (NOT that accurate!) and the Mini-USB cable (use your cell phone's cable, if you have one). - Overall, the 265WT is a much better value than the 255W so when the 265WT goes on sale, buy THAT unit instead of the 255W!
  • Pros: - Made a review on the Garmin Nuvi 265WT so read reviews there as it also applies to the Nuvi 255W as I won't repeat the information here. - You can use your cell phone's Mini-USB data cable from GPS to PC for data transfers like map updates! - You get 1 free map update within 60 days of the 1st satellite signal so make sure you have that Mini-USB cable!!
  • Cons: - NO Mini-USB cable (how the heck does Garmin expect owners to update the maps)?! Garmin's version cost over $20 but you can buy online for <7 USD. Darn you, Garmin!!! - Menu input screen is NOT sensitive and should be FIXED esp. if you have big fingers! - You should buy a (Garmin) bag to store this device for safekeeping! Buy online to save money!

Disappointing, after Street Pilot

Alan Mazer, Amazon
27 April 2010
  • Summary: I bought this after years of owning a Garmin Street Pilot, and I've got to say, while it's acceptable and much cheaper than the Street Pilot, I probably wouldn't recommend it to anyone. Unfortunately, the Street Pilot isn't made anymore. PROS: The Nuvi is small and easy to stuff into a airline carry-on or even a large pocket. It will run off batteries for those short trips when you don't want to plug the thing into the cigarette lighter (aka accessory outlet).

New or is it?

orchardside, Ebay
4 April 2010
  • Summary: I bought this GPS to replace the exact same model that was stolen from my car. It was described as brand new and looked pretty new out of the box but the unit itself was not in a plastic bag as my previous one was, leading me to question whether it had been used or was remanufactured. There's no way to know, it does work fine but a strange address in another state came up on it which also looks like it's been used.
