Summary: I wish that I would have had a reason to use this before the 30 day warranty ran out so I could get a refund, though I don't think that I could have on this. Must have been a "recertified" unit that was not advertised as one. The only reason that I gave this a 1 egg rating is because there was not an option for a "0" or a negative number.
Pros: Price at the time.
Cons: This thing can't find itself on the dash. I took a trip that I printed out a Google Map for and it was straight interstate all of the way. McComb, MS to Caryville, TN. This unit told me to take a right turn at EVERY exit. Every exit that I didn't take it would "recalculate route" as it should have, but I can't remember how many times that it locked up and I had to restart it. Probably about every 30 minutes. I used it for local directions this morning and it took me 1...
Summary: Also, as others have noted, there are no POIs (points of interest), which makes having this GPS in an area you're already familiar with incredibly useless. It'd be nice to see business and McDonalds and Pizza Huts and stores on my map instead of just colors. Also, there's no way to adjust the volume on this GPS without navigating through a ton of slow UI menus. There are no hardware buttons on the side to dim the screen or adjust the volume.
Pros: This GPS will lead to more frustration and stress than convenience. What boggles my mind is this model is no more improved than the older models- its the same terrible slow laggy UI with every key press. The keyboard is truly awful to type on and it LAGS like hell. Also the huge screen bevel makes it impossible to press certain letters or backspace without repositioning your hand awkwardly. I live in Rhode Island, so I'm frequently commuting between RI and Mass becaus...
Cons: Also, its very difficult to CHANGE THE ITINERARY; for example, if you want to take a different highway than it recommends to get some place. It's especially hard to do while driving- and unfortunately, you have no choice but to do it while driving because like I said before, there's no way to change the itinerary until you GET THERE. Perhaps the most frustrating problem with this GPS is that every time you start it up, it says "Searching for Satellites" which sometime...
Summary: I used a TomTom One in europe for four years without a single issue. Coming back I needed a new GPS and read some reviews indicating as Garmin is an american company versus TomTom which is european...Garmin's maps of the US are much more accurate. I fell for it and it wasn't long before I regretted it. After almost getting killed in a major merge because it took so long to clarify the route...I'd had it.
Pros: I can't think of any...really.
Cons: Ridiculous routes, incorrect routes and sometimes literally just going in circles. Maps are NOT accurate, despite what I've read in other reviews. Slow to reposition vehicle after turns, often so slow that you find yourself in the wrong lane if your in a series of quick turns.
Summary: I received this unit as an xmas gift. I would not have chosen a Garmin GPS myself because I have heard a number of cases where these units did not work right out of the box. If you buy one make sure the store plugs it in to see that it works before purchasing it. These are imports with questionable quality control which the consumer ends up paying extra to get it fixed.
Cons: Unit was DOA right out of the box. The manual supplied with the unit was for a different model. Could not find model 255w on the Garmin web site. I also could not find any troubleshooting info in the manual or on the web site for this problem. Garmin says I have to pay for shipping to have this unit fixed or replaced. No way!
