One very good reason NOT to buy this on SD card...

Simon Schofield, Amazon
27 January 2012
  • Summary: The maps are okay and I have certainly used them successfully, but if you wish to continue using these maps with a view to updating them, Garmin have advised me that the SD cards cannot be updated, but that I need to purchase new maps...

Annoying quirks

Anonymous, Newegg
21 January 2011
  • Summary: You do get most recent map upgrades when you register, but to me its expected that anything you buy should have access to the most recent maps. Also, there are simply too many GPS models/versions/options/maps/upgrades that Garmin provides.
  • Pros: -
  • Cons: Setting this thing up so far has been a pain. In order to register it, you need to install a plug-in into your browser, which claimed it was going to interact with websites that you visited [no thank you]. I would have preferred a stand alone desktop application. Now that I'm done with registerin...

Touchscreen Failed after Two Years

Joe Morgan "Joe", Amazon
7 September 2010
  • Summary: Functionally better than our older Garmin, but not made as well. Biggest gripe is that the touchscreen failed after two years of light use. Garmin support wanted $79 to replace it without a map upgrade, which costs another $50.

A little disappointing after using a Garmin Nuvi 350

Occasionally buy stuff, Amazon
7 June 2010
  • Summary: After a couple of years of very satisfactory performance, my Nuvi 350 started to flake out and needed to be replaced. Since all I really need is driving directions and no other special features, I decided on the 255 since it supposedly adequately met those minimal requirements.

Garmin 255

Overstock
15 April 2010
  • Summary: I could do as well blindfolded with a map. It will get you within a half mile of where you're going but not to the doorstep. I like the feature for resturants but that is about it. Won't be long before I toss it out the window while driving.

BAD New Zealand Directions

Bruce Jones "xtrmtrk", Amazon
9 March 2009
  • Summary: I arrived yesterday in New Zealand with the latest maps from Garmin in my GPS, ready to go. The first thing I needed to do was locate a branch for my lock bank here. The GPS sent me to an empty farmer's field. Today I wanted to travel several hours cross country.

User Review

Walmart
10 October 2008
  • Summary: I like most operations it performs---the unit I received had 2008 software, with a 1 free update---I have broadband and the update took over 8 hours to update. I am sure a more expensive unit would have more up to date software---but with the 2009 update this unit is lacking what I would think...

23 January 2012
  • Summary: it's a nice looking device with a great display and form-factor; it should be great. but i have problems with it - erratic routing - i asked it to direct me home while on the street where i live and it gave me a route that would take 4 hours! for travelling 30 yards.
