Summary: i was wondering why newegg was offering this at such a discount price, i had to call Garmin on tech issue and found that this model came out in early 2008, i found a Garmin® nüvi® 1200 GPS Navigation System for 79.99 with free shipping to a store near you. the model numbers go up with newer model so 255 is much older than 1200 which came out in 2011.
Pros: small size .....
Cons: no real time traffic, screen is too small, does not have eco-route feature, short battery life.
Changed from 1 to 5 stars - map updates no longer work
18 March 2011
Summary: Update: Dec 2014: I've had this a number of years. I have lifetime updates. The hardware works quite well, but Garmin Updates are horrible. And since Garmin dropped Garmin Communicator and came out with Garmin Express, I can no longer update this Garmin and support is of no help. It actually crashes Windows 8.1 when I try to do the system or maps update. There are numerous complaints about Garmin updates. Do some research.
Summary: How useful is a good GPS that you can't mount in a car? Somewhat useful. Since I had already activated the lifetime maps feature and downloaded the maps by the time I discovered it will not fit into the mounting unit, I didn't think it would be returnable. Besides, I was on my vacation at that point in another state, return wasn't an option until I got back two weeks later.
Pros: Works great as a GPS, has lifetime map updates.
Cons: The mounting bracket that clips on to the GPS so that you can attach it to the dashboard of a car does not fit the unit. It is too narrow. I tried for half an hour and three other people have tried, it just is too narrow for both clips to engage the unit at the same time.
Summary: I purchased this GPS to replace my old Garmin 340 that had for several years but just died. It's much smaller than my previous model so it takes up less room in my center console when not in use. I considered paying the extra money for the 4.3" screen but the 3.5" is big enough and clear enough to read. Battery life appears was much better than my older model as I only charged the unit twice in 4 months. Now the bad news. There is a little quirk with the voice commands.
Summary: I had this gps for only a few months, used only a few times and it already broke. the screen freezes on me and takes a few days till it will go back to working use. this is not what i expected when i was looking into garmin gps because i heard they're supposed to be top of the line. oh well.
Conclusion: This piece of crap should never have been allowed to see the outside of the Garmin Factory. The voice choices range from an angry old Hag with PMS, to an ex Drill sargent. The address memory storage is worse than using sticky notes, and it has gone backwards in ease of use, rather than getting better. I am not comparing it to much either, just my old baseball sized C330 that I guess I will have to dig out and use for my upcoming 4000 mile trip next week.
Summary: This is version Model: 010-11400-00 - at least three years out of date! The latest version is Model: 010-11875-00 Garmin.com, gps4us.com and gpscity.com are currently selling this map in the latest version. I am shocked that Amazon is selling such an old version without warning its customers of the fact that there are several newer versions!
