another choice

bessiepardner12, Ebay
4 January 2011
  • Summary: eBay asked me to write a review about the Garmin 205W GPS receiver. I have not taken the time to install the product as yet. Therefore, I cannot make a thorough evaluation of said product. I would suggest that eBay offer a choice covering this situation.

Very good 'cheap' GPS if looking for basic navigation

R. Toro "Tech Junkie", Amazon
20 November 2010
  • Summary: I have had this unit for about 8 months. It has given me no problems what so ever. The bad thing about it for me is how basic it is. If you want bluetooth compatibility, traffic updates, movie times, etc on your GPS, then this is not the device for you. But if all you want is to get around and find places, then this unit will work well. The price seems a little high right now for what it does ($167). For that price I would expect bluetooth compatibility.

Bad luck?

Alison Shih "AL", Amazon
29 August 2010
  • Summary: Update: 9/26/2011 I received a replacement unit from Garmin, but I chose to go back to my TomTom. I recently passed this Garmin to my brother, and it's treating him pretty well for the pass 2 weeks. Hasn't run into any problems I had with the previous unit, and hopefully it will stay that way. Nice basic unit after all, but not worth the price as is right now ($169??

Mixed bag

Retired Prof, Amazon
9 July 2009
  • Summary: The 205W meets one's basic expectations for a GPS, and has some nice (though not critical) features, including showing speed limits, your speed, the time, and direction. I also like the fact that it has a built-in battery that can be used on shorter trips. I would recommend getting the wide screen (W) version. I've only used it a few times so far, and not for a long trip. One time it took over 3 minutes to connect with satellites, even though it wasn't a cloudy day.

Is it any good?

G. Turner, Amazon
18 June 2011
  • Summary: Is it any good? I don't know, because I bought it as a gift, but the person I gave it to has managed to find her way to my house and back home again without getting lost or going down undrivable country lanes. The mapping is desperately out of date and doesn't show any new roads constructed in the last two years, and the one time I used it, I found it far less intuitive than my own TomTom.

Garmin 205WT Navigation Software

The HopPicker, Amazon
30 March 2011
  • Summary: I am I the only one who thinks the Garmin navigation software is 'duff'. Reviews I have read including those in Which ? Magazine fail to highlight what I consider to be two major faults. 1) When approaching a junction or roundabout etc the display at the top of the screen displays, by default, the road name (road numbers are displayed if the road has no name) eg Sheffield Road. Now as you approach the roundabout the road signs state the road number not the name eg A61.
