Nice Unit with NuLink Service at an Affordable Price
29 March 2012
Summary: I have owned several Garmin GPS Units and the Nuvi 1690 is a good unit if you are willing to pay the annual cost for the NuLink service after the expiration of the two year service that is included with the unit. NuLink is comparable to the now defunct MSN Direct service previously offered, except that NuLink includes Google Local Search.
Summary: As an in home estimater this GPS is the BOMB. I have to arrive at my appointments without having been there before. This model gives me a few ways to enter in a destination which is awsome for what I do since typo's happen on my lead info on occasion. If the address is incorrect I can Enter in their phone#, or even their name. Very few other models have these features and they are expensive. I love the ability to search keywords as well. I.E.
Hands Down you will not beat this Unit for the price and you get NuLink !

Summary: It's real easy.....Real Nice Unit !!! Lower Price because there are new models out but it's the best GPS i've ever owned. With the NuLink service it lets you be safer with traffic data.. You get fuel prices..The White Pages are nice too. Its fast with upcoming screens...You cant go wrong with this one.
Summary: Even in 2012, the 1690 is among the best GPS available, and I have tried most all. It receives traffic by satellite, so traffic information is availabe wherever you can get a GPS signal. In contrast, Garmin's FM traffic system, on newer units such as the 2595 and 3490, has limited reception, too many ads, and was useless here in Los Angeles County.
Pros: The 1690 has Garmin's best Traffic reception; Satellite traffic gets reception anywhere and has far fewer banner ads than the FM system; unit has been very dependable; intuitive operation; generally good routing; good bluetooth speakerphone for rental car travel
Cons: Routing sometimes requires a reality check, lacks voice recognition, lacks lifetime maps unless you buy them separately (be sure to update when you first receive the unit.)
Summary: I absolutely love this GPS. I live in Seattle and the traffic around here can be murderous. I purchased this model to get the real time traffic updates and let me tell you, it was well worth it. It has saved me countless hours of heartache of being stuck in traffic and has gotten me to work on time ever since I got it. I love it!!!!! Service from the company was prompt and courteous.
Summary: This is a great product that has many nice features like the nu-link that provides up to the minute gas prices, traffic, weather and other info. The problem with the unit is that the USB port did not properly sop that I could update the map and register the product. I therefore got a new 1690 to replace this one.
Summary: Very very unhappy with Garmin technical support. I've been fighting with them for over a week trying to get my "free one-time map update" (they charge you $10 S&H for a DVD - only free if you download). I tried the download and it pushed a bunch of bloat-ware onto my computer just to find out my i-net is too slow. Now I can't get them to let me order the DVD... Next time I'll go with someone other than Garmin.
Pros: Lane view is a nice new feature, phone number look-up works well and is very handy, overall size and screen quality is good, satellite reception is very good. Bluetooth phone link seems to work well, even transferred my contacts to the GPS from my Galaxy S.
Cons: Touch screen interface is sadly lacking. Compared to cell phones this GPS is very clunky and hard to use for viewing maps. Not crazy about the USB power, even when powered by the car the GPS battery runs down. It appears USB won't provide enough power to run the GPS and keep the battery charged.
Summary: This is a great unit. I love being able to look up gas prices. it is faster and more accurate than MSN was. The google app is useful. The coolest feature is the ability to input a 10 digit phone number instead putting a complete address in, this is much faster. Display so far is a bit dim in bright sun light and it is a little slower than previous units like 265 205 or 255, but the traffic seems much more timely and useful than the older MSN or FM receiver versions.
Summary: This is a great GPS. I really like the multi-destination feature and the points of interest. I replaced an older Garmin and this is an excellent unit with a large screen. The eco route and the traffic info make this unit extremely useful in all types of driving.
