Garmin nüvi 1690

The Garmin nüvi 1690 is a portable navigation device (PND) with a built-in wireless module that lets customers tap into Garmin’s nüLink! service that provides direct links to certain online information like Google™ local search, traffic, weather, fuel prices, movie listings, flight status, local events, white page telephone listings and Ciao!™, Garmin’s location-based social networking system that connects multiple networks into a single portal for Garmin users. The U.S. version of the nüvi 1690 comes with two years of free Garmin nüLink! Service.

Features

The nüvi 1690 with nüLink! Features Google local search and white page telephone listings. It also features online points of interest (POIs), allowing users to search for destinations by name or key words; a “quick search” feature that lets users search via categories like food, lodging and fuel, rather than typing a word or phrase into the search box. Detailed search results are displayed for many POIs including a location description, business address, phone number and popularity rating; and search for a person’s street address by their first name, last name or phone number with the included White Pages listings. The Garmin nüLink! also provides users with online services such as local events and movie listings, real-time flight status and traffic feature which provides information from NAVTEQ to help customers navigate in and around congestion. The preloaded POI database also allows users to search for a location and then receive turn-by-turn, voice prompted directions to the destination. The nüvi 1690 includes lane assist with junction view so drivers will see a realistic presentation of road signs and junctions along the route, as well as arrows that indicate the proper lane for navigation, facilitating navigation around unfamiliar intersections and exits; Ciao!, which links multiple location-centric social networks onto one application, allowing users to share their whereabouts with friends and family; ecoRoute™ that helps users stretch their dollars and conserve fuel by creating routes that are optimized for using less fuel; and Bluetooth® Wireless Technology that makes it possible to receive and place phone calls directly from the nüvi. It can be paired with over 200 Bluetooth enabled phones, and a driver can retrieve and dial numbers using a supported phone’s contact list, the phone’s call history log, or the nüvi’s preloaded points of interest database. The U.S. version of the nüvi 1690 has preloaded maps of North America and is available in the fourth quarter for a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $499.99.

The bottom line: By itself, the Garmin Nuvi 1690 is merely a solidly performing GPS device, but it earns its keep through the free NuLink service, giving users easy access to up-to-the-minute data for safety, convenience, and entertainment. Read more

With nüLink! connected services, Garmin are offering new worthwhile features, though they’re sometimes less successful than with the competition (TomTom). Still just as easy to use. It’s a shame you have to pay an annual subscription when the device itself is already pretty expensive. Read more

The widescreen visibility and lane assist technology do help make the Garmin Nuvi 1690 a worthwhile purchase for anyone new to GPS navigators. Free data subscription to NuLink services will mean that even if they are seldom used, no additional charges will be incurred. Deciding whether the increased price range is worth the list of additional features should be the determining factor when looking at buying. Read more

Garmin released its "Nu"-est Nuvi in July, the Nuvi 1690, which adds fuel to the already heated competition in the GPS market. This model includes Bluetooth connectivity, text-to-speech, lane assist, and two years of included live traffic service. While a fairly solid device, there are a few short comings, especially when it comes to POI searches. Read more

It's INTRUSIVE that Garmin would charge more than Magellan or Tom Tom for their GPS units and then slam us with POP-UP ADS to subsidize even greater profit. I emailed them and they said it was to offset the traffic alerts that they call free ($500.00 is free???). PLEASE charge me or allow me the option to diabale or pay instead of forcing me to watch your ad content from retailers like Puma or Wal-Mart. These generated FORCED ADS must drain not only the battery but also... Read more

I am driving extensively through GWB in NYC. I have another model nuvi680 for years. I expect much better traffic route advise from the nuvi1690 because it was the first Garmin's own traffic utilizing AT&T wireless network. Whenever there is traffic, 680 guides you through out of traffic as much as possible and give you the most efficient direction by the second. 1690 gives you a direction toward traffic area with just a warning on the screen. If you happen to know the... Read more
