The widescreen visibility and lane assist technology do help make the Garmin Nuvi 1690 a worthwhile purchase for anyone new to GPS navigators. Free data subscription to NuLink services will mean that even if they are seldom used, no additional charges will be incurred. Deciding whether the increased price range is worth the list of additional features should be the determining factor when looking at buying. Read more
With nüLink! connected services, Garmin are offering new worthwhile features, though they're sometimes less successful than with the competition (TomTom). Still just as easy to use. It's a shame you have to pay an annual subscription when the device itself is already pretty expensive. Read more
By itself, the Garmin Nuvi 1690 is merely a solidly performing GPS device, but it earns its keep through the free NuLink service, giving users easy access to up-to-the-minute data for safety, convenience, and entertainment. Read more

The Garmin Nuvi 1690 shares many of the features found on the recently reviewed Nuvi 1370T, including a 4.3in screen, text-to-speech conversion (which enables the device to announce street names), Bluetooth phone connectivity, and lane assist with junction view (so you can see simulated highway signs). The 1690 is slightly thicker and about half an ounce heavier than the 1370T, however; and unlike the 1370T, it includes multisegment routing with route optimization. This is one of the first Garmins to have the NuLink Live services I like the fact that you get a years subscription to live service included in the price which is better than Tom Tom which only comes with a few months before you have to pay for it. I purchased two different refurbished Garmin 765t units that both had issues. They were loud, sounded like a disk was reading. Other issues also. After returning the second 765t I decided on this 1690. I was hesitant because of the nu-link services and the negative reviews from users that purchased the new 1690's. I came home, upgraded the software (free), downloaded the new maps (free), and installed more custom vehicles (free). Read more
I purchased the 1690 refurbished with a year of nu-link and a two year warranty. I have only had it for a few days so I will amend this review at a later date, but so far I love it...very easy to set up. Now if you buy refurbished call Garmin...I did not wait long. Email or fax them your invoice and you can download the latest maps. Garmin's customer service was very good. This can be tricky with refurbished so you really need to call. Read more
Very very unhappy with Garmin technical support. I've been fighting with them for over a week trying to get my "free one-time map update" (they charge you $10 S&H for a DVD - only free if you download). I tried the download and it pushed a bunch of bloat-ware onto my computer just to find out my i-net is too slow. Now I can't get them to let me order the DVD... Next time I'll go with someone other than Garmin. Read more

The U.S. version of the nüvi 1690 comes with two years of free Garmin nüLink! Service.
The nüvi 1690 with nüLink! Features Google local search and white page telephone listings. It also features online points of interest (POIs), allowing users to search for destinations by name or key words; a “quick search” feature that lets users search via categories like food, lodging and fuel, rather than typing a word or phrase into the search box. Detailed search results are displayed for many POIs including a location description, business address, phone number and popularity rating; and search for a person’s street address by their first name, last name or phone number with the included White Pages listings. The Garmin nüLink! also provides users with online services such as local events and movie listings, real-time flight status and traffic feature which provides information from NAVTEQ to help customers navigate in and around congestion. The preloaded POI database also allows users to search for a location and then receive turn-by-turn, voice prompted directions to the destination. The nüvi 1690 includes lane assist with junction view so drivers will see a realistic presentation of road signs and junctions along the route, as well as arrows that indicate the proper lane for navigation, facilitating navigation around unfamiliar intersections and exits; Ciao!, which links multiple location-centric social networks onto one application, allowing users to share their whereabouts with friends and family; ecoRoute™ that helps users stretch their dollars and conserve fuel by creating routes that are optimized for using less fuel; and Bluetooth® Wireless Technology that makes it possible to receive and place phone calls directly from the nüvi. It can be paired with over 200 Bluetooth enabled phones, and a driver can retrieve and dial numbers using a supported phone’s contact list, the phone’s call history log, or the nüvi’s preloaded points of interest database. The U.S. version of the nüvi 1690 has preloaded maps of North America and is available in the fourth quarter for a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $499.99.
