Great for the money

James O., Newegg
25 May 2012
  • Summary: About the best bang for the buck!
  • Pros: Gets you there everytime. Easy to program. Knows speed limit and will change within 100' of roadside sign. Usually finds satellite within 2 minutes sometimes within seconds.
  • Cons: Power hog when turned off. Pulls 0.75A when off and will run car battery down in 4 days or less if unused. Did this twice before I figured what was happening. Unplug if car is going to set more than 12 hours. Does not necessarily take you the best route to destination but will get you there. Best...

First GPS, Decent Little Device

Christopher H., Newegg
10 March 2012
  • Summary: I had never needed GPS services beyond what my phone could provide, but I recently moved to Los Angeles and needed something for apartment hunting in a new town. I was actually pleasantly surprised with some of the features.
  • Pros: Large screen is nice. I'm not accustomed to glancing over at a device for directions. So, if I have to take my eyes off the road, I'd like to see what I need to see quickly and get my eyes back to what's in front of me. Pretty cool feature tells you which lane or lanes you can be in to make the t...
  • Cons: The "free lifetime traffic" is a little misleading. To enable traffic, you have to agree to be served up ads (so free isn't really free). The ads can be distracting, so I virtually never use it. Traffic is better/more accurate with Google Maps on my cellphone, anyway. Touch screen can be a little...

Overall, pretty good.

BRADLEY B., Newegg
7 March 2012
  • Summary: About the registration date shown on the my.garmin.com dashboard site, Garmin says hang onto your receipt as proof of purchase. Firmware update went smoothly but it was my fault that the map update failed the first time around. You really do need 10GB free space on your C: drive.
  • Pros: LMT - Lifetime maps 'n traffic. Traffic is paid for by ads but the ads are not obtrusive. 5" screen size. Easy to use touch screen. Recertified unit already had fairly up to date firmware and maps. Voice software is getting better at pronouncing names of streets and places. No need to set time zo...
  • Cons: No printed instructions or disc included. Mapsource not included, nor any other way to download and work with waypoints and routes. Recertified unit shows registration date from six months ago on Garmin site. The voices downloadable from Garmin are not as well done as voices for Tom Tom. Searchin...

Nuvi LMT 1490

Ras Delchimski, rakuten
20 January 2012
  • Summary: I bought this to replace my nuvi 360. I was happy when i got this but i was a little taken aback later when i realised the junction view is not as great as that of the tom tom. Also the Nuvi 360 had an MP3 player which i can't find on this yet?

Handy when you need it

James L., Newegg
3 January 2012
  • Summary: We have ignored it a lot when it tried to take us through some known high congestion areas but it barks at you. We just turned off the sound. We use it little on the highway but when we get to a destination town it is great for guiding us to an address we put in for a restaurant, store or hotel and...
  • Pros: Mostly works well, good price, big help in navigating strange towns and cities.
  • Cons: Can't turn off the "recalculating" ditty that seems to play constantly sometimes. Slow boot, sometime says the target address doesn't exist, sometimes it just announces "traffic ahead" when the road is mostly clear and little traffic. Only one map update that we have to use within three months.

Love the Garmin, hate the traffic "feature"

Eric Schnorr, Amazon
24 September 2011
  • Summary: I love this GPS. The bluetooth and lane change features are great. It's easy to read & easy to use. Would but it again. Only complain is the traffic feature (let's just say I'm glad it's free). The annoying pop up ads wouldn't bother me if the traffic system actually worked.

Pretty good deal..

Richard B., Newegg
14 September 2011
  • Pros: Screen size is great, easy to navigate through the options. The LMT is a great addition to this unit.
  • Cons: The unit 'lost' all United States at random last week. I put an address in to the GPS, left the vehicle for approx 15 min and returned to find that the address was no longer up. It appeared that the unit had reset itself. When I went to enter the address, nothing could be found. When I went to th...

Good Performer; Better than smartphone-based GPS services

Daniel K., Newegg
2 August 2011
  • Summary: This 1400-series device uses NAVTEQ traffic data as explained on the manufacturer's product web page; it does NOT (and never did) use the now-defunct MSN Direct traffic service.
  • Pros: Large screen. Accurate to within 12 feet in Northeastern US (depending on satellite reception, etc.). Good device--never had a significant problem with it. Response times are much better than Android-based smartphone GPS services; accuracy is about the same. Very satisfied with this dedicated, st...
  • Cons: Resolution is not great despite large screen. Touchscreen sometimes responds in unexpected and undesirable ways which can get frustrating on the road. Cord is bulky (due to integrated traffic antenna); I rarely use the traffic data. Battery life is not that good when using this as a portable devi...

New to GPS - impressed

Paula F., Newegg
18 February 2011
  • Summary: Don't know why cj1984 saw ads - I haven't seen a single one. For a first-timer, I'm impressed with how useful it has been. I don't like sitting in the car for 5-10 seconds while it powers up. I haven't found anything wrong with its accuracy, unlike other reviewers.
  • Pros: Lightweight; easy to read screen; accurate; Bluetooth; lifetime maps.
  • Cons: Slow to power up; power cord too bulky.

Great Price with Lifetime Map & Traffic ($191.99)

John, rakuten
22 January 2011
  • Summary: This GPS is great with Lifetime Map updates & Traffic for $191.99. Satellite acquisition is fast, the road speed limit reminder is a nice feature. With that said I'm a little disappointed with the map data points of interest. I'm in Central NJ I found several long established business missing..
