Summary: Maybe I just got a lemon. We'll see. Garmin is sending me a replacement. Overall, this is a pretty decent unit. I would NOT have paid $450 for it, though, after using it. There are several aspects that are just like much less expensive units. Frankly, I'm really not sure what it is that I am paying this premium price for.
Summary: I'm quite dissapointed in this unit, as I expected more. First, I really don't care for the ads that pop up when stopped. I certainly didn't intend to buy an advertising kiosk for my dashboard. Second, I am not fascinated with the routing and traffic functions. Many GPS's learn your route and estimate traffic on that route. This unit also will not route to the roads I take to work, even though it shows a shorter commute time once I turn to take the back way to work.
Summary: The SatNav was brilliant when navigating through large towns / cities. Other times it was awful. Main problems were:- 1)switching itself off for no reason 2)repeatedly recalculating the route, often at critical points ie when coming to a junction 3)at times it just could not calculate the route and gave up - just displayed map view (parts of France / Italy were incalculable - you had to put in interim towns to get it to work - by reference to a paper map!!
Summary: I bought the Garmin 1695 , having had a Garmin 1490T and discovering that if you live in the sticks, you won't be receiving any traffic updates whatsoever. These newer "live" connected devices from Garmin, Navigon and TomTom sound fantastic on paper, and are different in that they use a cellular data connection, built into the unit itself.
Summary: bought the above no problems with the product (up graded a model over my intention because of £30 cash back offer) but the cashback system is another matter. I attached comfimation of amazon order when signing up to the scheme - clearly that did not work as they sent emails saying nothing recieved - meaning more logging, on scanning Amazon confirmation etc ( invoice binned i guess).
Summary: Having used TomTom sat navs for several years I decided to try the Garmin 1695. I found the map to be outdated (was in a field according to the sat nav for 5 miles on the M80), speed limits to be highly inaccurate and estimated arrival times to be highly optimistic. Will change back to my TomTom at the earliest opportunity.
