Excellent purchase relative to value and usefulness.

Summary: Great handheld GPS for backup to the permanently mounted unit on your boat. Relatively inexpensive for the convenience of knowing that you'll always have GPS service from satellites no matter where you're located on the waters.
Summary: I bought this Garmin GPSMAP for my husband as a Christmas present. He has an old Garmin that is around 8-9 years old and I thought a more up-to-date one was needed. He very much liked the Garmin, even ordered the maps to go with it, but found it lacked one thing that he needed that this Garmin did not have. The maps showed a 10-foot span under water. My husband fishes streams, fly fishing out of a kayak.
Summary: I recently bought a Chris Craft Corsair that was not fitted with a GPS. Choosing a GPS for that was difficult, as there is not a lot of space around the helm where a larger unit could be mounted permanently. So I chose the GPS78 with a RAM mount and it has been great so far. I have to spend a bit of time on getting the device set up in a way where the screen does not go into power save mode quite so quickly.
