Summary: Did not turn on. Followed directions. Installed batteries. Won't turn on. Replaced batteries with another new set that worked in another device. Will not turn on. Checked battery direction. Won't turn on. Needed short term GPS to work while main unit is being replaced.
Summary: Instead of paying $300 for this device I plan to use a smartphone app, and an iPhone charger ready for backup (today's are capable of recharging a phone up to four times). That along with a waterproof case I'll be good to go for coastal navigation on a small boat here in Tampa.

Summary: I use a suction cup RAM mount on my standup paddleboard so that I can easily monitor my average speed and distance and my heart rate while I workout on my board. I can read the screen easily, even on sunny days.
I can't understand why Garmin didn't put some effort into developing a screen comparible to at least the lower end smart phones

Summary: This review is purely based on first impression as I played with it for a total of 15 min. before it went back into the box to return.I new as soon as I opened the box it was not going to work for me.I purchased this to mount on my waverunner to help me explore the coast and inlands of the jersey...
Summary: Well I ordered this unit to replace my few year old Legend HCx when I found out that map updates were no longer available for the unit. I received it in the mail today, and I'm disappointed that the inland maps have little detail.
Summary: Tried this GPS out. Long time Garmin user auto, marine and hand held. The model 78 and 78sc is a truly terrible device. The screen resolution is bad, the maps detail even zoomed in is deficient.
The triaxial compass makes a real nice difference compared to the 76

Summary: I've owned the 76s and the 60csx. The first thing I noticed with the 78 is the lack of a decent manual, even online. Thankfully, most of it can be figured out. The triaxial compass makes a real nice difference compared to the 76.
