Summary: I use my Garmin 495 every weekend and am amazed at it's abilities in the air. In automobile mode it recognizes street names and will navigate to cities but nothing smaller. Unfortunately the automotive mode does not have the ability to search for an address. Garmin customer support has not been responsive.
GARMINMAP 496 IS GREAT, EASY TO USE AND ACTUALLY FITS IN MY COCKPIT
1 September 2012
Summary: I have used the GPSMAP 496 for several years, this is the second one I have owned and feel it is the best of the portable GPS units that Garmin has produced. I particularly like the fact that it has automotive and marine nav built in and think the weather feature is the best thing since the engine for light airplanes.
Summary: Though now discontinued in favor of the 696 and 796, this is still an outstanding piece of avionics for many airplanes and helicopters. I moved up from using a 196 for 10+ years, so I am very comfortable with the buttons and the terrain, weather overlay, Taxiways and heliports are not just gimmicks but safety items in the cockpit. I am also a ship captain so the marine maps is nice, as was the 196.
Summary: This WAAS enabled GPS is superb for showing weather and other hazards along any intended route of flight for aviation use. The crisp display shows all the usual important data such as ground speed, course, and distance. A useful synthetic steam gauge and HSI display option is available. It provides very adequate guidance for approaches but is not really meant for this application.
Summary: I bought the Garmin 496 to help aid cross-country air travel in small planes like Cessnas and Citabrias. I love this computer - it's better than having someone in the right seat figuring stuff out. Very easy single-hand use, gotta love the XM WX, terrain mapping and airport info is fantastic. I don't use this much as a automobile GPS, since I have a Garmin Nuvi that's much smaller and lighter for that purpose.
Summary: I have always been an electronics person. I am amazed at this product. To be able to navigate in the air, on the road, then by water is outrageous! The details of the mapping is rich and crisp. Garmin knocked one out of the ballpark with this one!

Summary: Even if you are not a pilot this GPS is the one to get. It contains both aviation and auto navigation. This gives you much more detail especially around airports when you are driving. You can also get real time weather reports. This is a great asset particularly if you drive in hurricaine or tornado prone areas. It also contains a topographical terrain database perfect if you are also a camper or hiker. So whether you fly, drive, hike or camp this GPS does it all.
