Summary: I'm a big fan of Garmin products but this unit has been somewhat of a disappointment. The sonar in particular performed weakly - sometimes not reliably showing bottom 20 feet down if soft or weedy. The unit would also often reboot when experiencing shock, say hitting a big wave. After two years I replaced it with an Echomap 50S which has been superb - better in every respect.
Summary: This is the best unit I have ever purchased. Easy to use and read, my kids can even operate it with ease. For the money though, I wish I would have spent another $100.00 an got the 541. It's exactly the same unit, just with a larger screen. The other thing is West Marine sells the unit for $4.00 cheaper and there right around the corner, no shipping cost/no waiting.
You will be very content and safe if you buy this GPS

Summary: I had one on my 20ft Key West which I operated in the Lemon Bay area of the inland waterway on the SW Florida coast. This is a very shallow area and it's vital to stay within the deeper water. The included mapping and graphing was colored and detailed in a way that made it easy to stay in safe water. It took some time initially to learn my way around this device, but well worth the efort.
Factory said it would hook up to my old unit cable , no it doesn't and the screen is not as big as i thought, I would send back

Summary: I have the Garmin 178C which I like. I was told by factory it would hook up to my old cable and it doesn"t and the screen is not as big as my 178C and it is small. I was very disappointed in screen size. I would send this back if any way possible ! do you have any ideas you could help me with on how to get rid of this thing.
Summary: I have had my Garmin 440s for 4 years. Decided to update my maps for my boat/fishfinder. All I need is new marine maps. Why can't I just go onto the website and type in the name of my device and see what updates are available? After 20 minutes of hunting around, with no help, I decided to just click on one of the fancy software updates they were advertising. Got a big ad for all the fancy new things i can do with this, all of which I don't need.
