  • Summary: I am very new to the handled GPS devices, I have the typical car type and the ones I have are tom Tom and it works very well , but as for using it on foot it's not worth the effort, so it sent me looking for something I could afford or at least purchase and get what I pay for ,and when looking over amazo and ebay and etc ,do many if what is offers runs between 90 and 300 to even get close to a multi use GPS and this dilemma led me to Garmin products as they typically...

The reserection of a good companion on long, lonely drives.

  • Summary: First of all, my rating of this device is based upon my experience with this device, only. Compared to today's GPS devices, this is archaeic technology and would rate ZERO STARS in a side-by-side test. I have used a GPS III for over a decade and with 9,300+ hours of use, the display was becoming unreadable (burning out). However, if you make repetative long trips, driving alone as I do, it makes a wonderful 'trip monitor'.

Not such a great buy anymore

voodoocaptain, Ebay
17 July 2011
  • Summary: Buyer beware...posting this review in July 2011...all the Garmin III plus models available for purchase are OLD and even though some of the ones for sale may not have been used that much, the internal memory battery goes bad from age and the GPS will not hold waypoints in the memory for more than a few days and the cost of sending it in to GARMIN for repairs offsets the "cheap" price you paid for it used.

Compact, Simple, it just plain works.

  • Summary: The GPS-III+ may not be the current top of the line, but it is a great, portable, and functional tool for the back country whether on foot, bike, or jeep. For the geek, its NMEA connector allows PC connection for use with many applications for mapping and tracking.

  • Summary: I bought this gadget to have cheap and reliable GPS in the car and for hiking. Actually tested a simple and reliable device which does not require delicate handling. Works the same with the European measures. 100% satisfied.

Old Tech Works

si55yphus, Ebay
6 March 2011
  • Summary: Bought this because it displays mph to the tenths over 99mph. This is important for rally racing to hit an average time. The Garmin GPS III and III plus are among the few that can do this.

Nifty older gps...

mr.eyes, Ebay
10 February 2011
  • Summary: The only real problem with this older gps is its memory. At about 1.4meg, it will not downloading a ton of maps. I think I down loaded 4 o4 5 maps and that was it. It acquires signals in good time and I have grown to like the little guy.
