Garmin Foretrex 401

The Garmin Foretrex 401 is a GPS navigator that integrates high-sensitivity; WAAS-enabled GPS receiver and USB interface into a waterproof device for light hikers, skiers, campers and military personnel. The device is worn on the wrist, and features a GPS receiver with HotFix™ that acquires and maintains satellite reception in heavy tree cover or deep canyons. It monitors and stores routes, tracks and waypoints. The device also features TracBack® which allows the Foretrex to retrace the path back to the starting point. This feature allows users to find their way back to a campsite or vehicle, using the breadcrumb trail, data fields and compass screen on the LCD display. The Foretrex 401 features dual-position readout so that users can view current location in multiple formats, including latitude/longitude and an alternate position format of choice. The Foretrex 401 also incorporates a trip computer, sunrise/sunset and hunting and fishing information and can be connected to a PC or Mac via USB connection. It does not support basemap, preloaded maps, nor does it allow users to add more maps.

Features

The Foretrex 401 features an electronic compass and a barometric altimeter. The device allows users to wirelessly share routes, tracks and waypoints between certain Foretrex, Oregon and Colorado devices, and it is also compatible with Garmin heart-rate monitors and cadence sensors. Weighing at 3 ounces and powered by 2 AAA batteries, the Foretrex 401 provides up to 17 hours of usafe time. Users can chronicle their activities by storing up to 500 waypoints, 20 routes or a tracklog of up to 10,000 points and 10 saved tracks. The Foretrex 401 measures 2.9 x 1.7 x 0.9 inch (7.5 x 4.3 x 2.3 cm) and sports a 1.4 inch x 0.9 inch (3.6 x 2.3 cm) black and white LCD display with 100 x 64 pixels resolution. It also features unit-to-unit transfer (shares data wirelessly with similar units), electronic compass and has a barometric altimeter. The Foretrex 401 however does not support automatic routing (turn by turn routing on roads), is not a touchscreen unit, is not geocaching-friendly and does not support outdoor GPS games. The Foretrex 401 also does not display tide tables, area calculation, custom POIs (ability to add additional points of interest) and does not have a picture viewer. The device can be connected to a PC or Mac and allows users to synchronize information and data on it via USB connection.
