Sleek and Compact: Garmin Forerunner 405 GPS for Runners
10 April 2009
Conclusion: GPS for runners gets more sleek and compact than ever with the Garmin Forerunner 405 sports watch. Runners have been enjoying the precision of GPS workout and race tracking with the Forerunner 305 , one model below the 405. But the 305 is bulky. The new 405 is not only slimmer, but features an innovative new touch-bezel control system. The 405 also includes a heart rate monitor and wireless transfer of workout data to your PC and to Garmin Connect online.
Pros: Accurate GPS distance data for runners., Captures workout and heart rate data, and wirelessly and automatically transfers to your PC., Touch-bezel control eliminates need for multiple buttons.
Cons: Touch-bezel control takes some practice to master., Heart rate monitor strap must be moist to provide accurate readings.
Conclusion: Overall I was extremely impressed with the 405. As an exercise system I’ve seen nothing even close, and the cost is quite reasonable for what it does. The touch bezel and wireless interface are more advanced than the Suunto X9i, and the improved GPS reception is pretty darn good.

Pros: Innovative touch bezel, Good GPS capabilities, Vast array of features,

Summary: Of all Garmin’s fitness watches, the Forerunner 405 is the most sophisticated, but also the most stylish. This is mainly thanks to a touch-sensitive ring that keeps buttons to a minimum, but it’s helped by a 124x95 dot-matrix LCD display that allows the 405 to display reasonably complex levels of information without having a large, multi-section display like its Forerunner 305 and 205 brethren. The screen also has a user-activated blue backlight for running in the dark.
