Summary: It takes forever to find satellites. My old 201 is much better. Hopefully the new models work better but I have completed workouts before it found a satellite (I got tired of waiting and got started). And this is in a clear day, open sky. Very disappointed.
Summary: I first owned the 305 with the heart rate monitor and it worked great for about a year or so. Then in the middle of a run it just shut off, I lost all of my run data, had to stop to re-acquire the satellites only to have it die again when I started running. This happened on and off for the next few runs and instead of throwing it in the ocean I returned it to REI since I still had the receipt.
Summary: When I first got this, it worked wonderfully. But maybe 8 months later, the software stopped recognizing the device, the sound stopped working, and eventually the battery quit charging. I wrote to Garmin and, after giving me a bit of a hard time, they eventually sent me a replacement since it was still under warranty. The new one was great. Until about 6 months later, when the software stopped recognizing the device again.
Summary: As a runner, I was looking for an intiutive watch that would track distance, pace, time, and laps. This watch isn't it. It looks good on a runners wrist but that's where it ends. The functionality isn't user friendly, it beeps at random times when I'm not wearing it, and the runs do not upload easily or consistently. This morning, I was into my run for eight minutes before it located the satelite (no clouds, few trees).
Photo of item is that of a Forerunner 205 - not the Foretrex 205
16 February 2011
Summary: The features of this particular item number/seller are mis-represented as a Foretrex 205, but as you look at the item's photograph the word Forerunner is clearly visible. Garmin GPS FORETREX 205 Wrist Wearable Personal Navigator - 010-00361-00 THe two designs have very different purposes. The actual Foretrex models are for designed for self-location in a rural/rugged environemnt such as would require camping gear, hiking boots, etc...
Caution 205 and 305 will only last for 12 - 18 months!

9 June 2010
Summary: This is a great product, but it will only last you 12 - 18 months before the battery stops holding a charge and Garmin will not replace it as it is then out of warranty. This has been my experience and that of many of my running friends. The 205 and 305 are super when they work, but your battery will very likely stop holding a charge after 12 - 18 months and then you're sunk.
Satellite and Electronic Problems - Not Recommended
agedrunner "agedrunner", Amazon
25 September 2008
Summary: I purchased the 205 in October of 2006. I found that the unit had problems locating satellites in the city or running in areas with tree branches overhead. This included Pittsburgh, PA, Ohiopyle in PA, and Golden Gate Canyon in CO. It worked fine on wide open trails. It also locked up a couple of days ago and appears to have a battery problem or software problem with the unit. This appears to be the same problem I have seen reported by other users.
5 out of 5 for 6 months then unable to locate satellite
15 October 2007
Summary: 5 out of 5 for 6 months then unable to locate satellite since then making unit totally useless. Had no time to wait (35 minutes) for GARMIN to give me a number so I could ship it back to them. This is second Garmin forerunner I have bought in two years. 201 was brain damaged. Will look for other manufacturer in future. Buyer beware!
