Be Aware: This Takes Some Serious Commitment

Robert Collins, Amazon
22 May 2014
  • Summary: Using the Garmin GPS on my car dashboard couldn't be more user-friendly. Its cousin, the Garmin eTrex 20, not so much. I had to spend about 20 hours on my home computer just to get the specific topo map I needed downloaded to the eTrex 20. An investment of 20 hours, just to have a handheld GPS to take along for a hike in the woods. If you're willing to make that kind of commitment on the front end, the eTrex 20 is a good tool.

it's ok as a hiking GPS unit

Arthur Dentist, Amazon

  • Summary: It will tell you where things are. You can download free US Topo map (not from Garmin but from other sources) and put a large area map on its memory. The GPS capability is great, as to be expected from Garmin. The software, however, sucks badly. It' slow. It's not easy to use. The desktop software (on a mac) is bad and full of bugs to a point of almost unusable.

  • Summary: I have not worked with it enough to feel competent. It does a lot. Topo Maps and SD micro card needs to be purchased separately.

  • Summary: My partner and I needed a small handheld GPS that we could use on our hikes. After doing a bit of research, we found this eTrex 20 for less than $200.00! Once we picked it up and started using it, we enjoyed the screens and the different options. The reason we chose the eTrex was because it has the most built-in memory, and it's expandable with a micro SD. It's pretty decent in the sunlight, most of the areas we've tried it in were desert areas. So that's a big plus!

  • Summary: The eTrex 20 is easy to use. The different pages are easy to find and to navigate through. After playing with it a few minutes I could find the different pages and options without having to refer to the manual for every little step. The pages are well laid out and easy to read. Two things that I don't like: First, the joystick protrudes from the face slightly, which I suppose is necessary in order to be able to work it.

Does the job, maps from garmin are a pain

Zartan Bombasto, Amazon
9 January 2013
  • Summary: Just bought my first dedicated GPS, a Garmin etrex 20 and until I bought a map from Garmin I didn’t have anything bad to say about them but their business practices leave a lot to be desired. I buy a map for my device…no not buy….Lease the right to use a map for one year on one device. WTH!?!?! This model makes zero sense and makes your customers hate you.

Cons

ruko, Amazon
4 December 2012
  • Summary: One concern. The ridiculous addition of miles after you turn the unit OFF and turn it back on in a different location! Makes the odometer worthless. Other manufacturers have figured out how to eliminate this ridiculous behavior. My brand new unit had 8000+ miles on it out of the box. This is mileage from Taiwan, where it is manufactured, to my home.

  • Summary: Great durable product. However, not user friendly at all, and does not come preloaded with maps. If you plan on taking it straight from the box to the trail you MUST download or purchase maps.
  • Pros: Lightweight, Rugged, Stable
  • Cons: Difficult To Set Up, Not user friendly

Garmin eTrex 20

Bow hunter, Amazon
26 March 2012
  • Summary: I've owned a handheld Garmin for years; the eTrex Legend. I loved it until I started getting blue screens that required a hard reset. I decided to upgrade to the newer version after reading all of the great reviews on the satellite capabilities. The reviews marveled at the ability to acquire satellites quickly and even indoors. I can testify to the fact the eTrex 20 will work in more adverse conditions than my old Legend, but the speed simply isn't there.
