PIECE OF JUNK! In fact, I'd like to say 'piece of . . . ' , well, you know what

SwissPete, Amazon

  • Summary: Granted, I'm a rather simple guy. Don't ask much of our overly technologized world. But I want some things to work, when a situation asks for it. This GPS isn't doing that. Over, and over, and over, have I tried to get this thing to give me proper distance recordings of hikes I'm doing. It won't do it. WON'T because sometimes - seemingly when it wants to - it does what is asked of it. I've talked to the tech help.

  • Summary: This unit is extremely difficult to learn for a first timer. No tutorials worth watching, no how to's worth using and the manual "Getting started" is almost not worth reading. This unit may be ok for someone who knows how to use a handheld, but certainly not for a beginner. Took it back and will just use maps in the woods and on the water. If I could find a school or go somewhere to learn the eTrex 20, might have been different.

Be prepared to spend another $100 on maps to get anything equal to an auto GPS

Joel Pickett, Amazon
1 February 2014
  • Summary: I turned on my eTrex 20 and found it indicated I was walking down the middle of a major highway, 500 feet west of my actual location. I complained to Garmin about the errors in the basemap. Their response was; "When using a recreational GPS device, the current position displayed on the screen may at times be slightly inaccurate. The basemap in the GPS devices has been drawn from a map with a scale of 1:100,000.

  • Summary: Let me start by saying the GPS itself is good. The software,I`m talking about BaseCamp is a pain in the backside.I will never buy another Garmin GPS because of BaseCamp.Every time it updates you lose lose information you stored in it.They expect you to back up your GPS every time it does update which takes up computer space.BirdsEye is not much better, the satellite images are old and half of the time their server is down.If I could of gave less than 1 star I would of,just...

  • Summary: Buyer Beware!Even though Garmin as been around for a long time,Their software-BaseCamp has so many flaws,That it becomes frustrating to use.BirdsEye is just as bad and you have to pay extra for that.Their Gps`s work fine but coupled with BaseCamp and BirdsEye it`s not worth the money.I would look to another GPS manufacture that has User friendly software. This is my 3rd Garmin GPS and just like baseball Garmin your OUT!If I could give it less than 1 star I would.

  • Summary: This unit comes with a very basic map. Show only major roads. Forces you to purchase a $40 or $50 upgrade to do what you want. I would not recommend it. I will not purchase another Garmin.

  • Summary: You have to buy to many add on's for it to work such as layers, purchase separate for another $100. I purchased a free app for my phone that did more and with a larger screen.
