It works great with a Mac but dismal documentation!
17 May 2010
Summary: After being content with my Garmin Vista, I decided it was time to upgrade to the latest Garmin Vista eTrex HCx. With a new MapSource Topo USA for MAC available, and the ability to transfer National Parks Topo Version 3 from PC to MAC I thought it would be an ideal time to "upgrade" to this model.
Summary: Sadly my old Vista Cx died again due to a malfunctioning power button. Like the first unit, which exited service after only about two weeks of use, the warranty replacement died about two years later the same death. Cannot turn it on reliably anymore, it takes about 20 tries to get it running.
Well Built & Works Well BUT Lacks Street Resolution

Summary: I purchase this Garmin eTrex Vista HCx to replace using my laptop + GPS + MS Streets & Trips. This Garmin is well built - solid, sturdy, waterproof, & the screen is crips & clear with vibrant colors. It obtains satellite signals quickly, even indoors.
Summary: I just sold my Vista Cx on Amazon and bought the HCx because I fly a lot and like to know where I am and the Cx lost reception unless I held it close to the plane's window which always looks suspicious. I trust that the HCx will be better in the air.
Summary: I buy this item here, from Amazon UK and it's all ok. The GPS is nice, small, user friendly... really nice light screen, hight definition screen... before this I had a Garmin MAP 60C and i was really happy with it...
Summary: I bought this some time ago but after the Etrex Vista Hcx was just out of warrantee (of course) the rubber surround became stretched and the glue that fixed it turned into sticky gunge. I've muddled through up to now with superglue but the rubber band has now expired.
Summary: I was most excited when I received my new toy & headed straight out walking to calibrate. Initially i was very pleased, everything worked fine when I did my test walk over Cannock Chase (been walking it for years so no chance of getting lost).
Summary: I got my original Garmin eTrex Vista in 1999 complete with UK Metropolitan map. It served me well, it functioned flawlessly from the day I got it to the day I replaced it. There were however good reasons for replacing it in late 2007: 1 - Geocaching had been invented!
Summary: The first thing to say is that it is only worth buying this model if you are going to buy the Garmin mapping software as well. This is because you can't download maps from any other supplier. The mapping software doesn't include many footpaths, which is major short coming.
Summary: Unfortunately I seem to have had a similar experience to Martin. My unit too hangs/freezes without warning, which is rather unhelpful to say the least if you are trying to use it to keep a track log in areas with few marked paths.
