Summary: The etrex Vista HCx is surrounded by a rubber band on its outside. Mine is less than two years old and the rubber has come loose on 3 of the 4 sides. The function keys are built into the rubber band. I contacted Garmin since they used cheap glue thinking they would fix it or replace it. Garmin told me to buy some super glue and fix it myself. It's a cheap product. The built it so it will fall apart, and they won't stand behind their products. Don't buy a etrex Vista.
Summary: Given as a gift,...added hundreds of $$ of maps for Kayaking. Within a short time it would freeze up & would need to be restarted: forgetting everything I had already covered. I couldn't use it for more than 5 minutes without a freeze up. I tried reboot methods and just grew frustrated. Regretably: I have lost it (no, I did not throw it in the river). Now to appease my conscience (since it was an expensive gift) I must replace it.
Summary: We bought the eTrex Vista HCx to use while hiking etc. We purchased several maps (all $100 or more) for the unit. We used it 3-4 times while it was new and then due to life we didn't use if for 6 months. We took it out for a late fall BWCA Canoe trip and it worked fine. We switched to the street navigation and went home. The next spring when I took it out it would not power up.

Summary: Overview - I received a lemon, had to send it in twice during its one year warranty period, and it failed again just after the warranty expired. Based on poor experience with other Garmin products, I cannot recommend this unit. Details- I purchased this for use on a trip to Alaska, where we planned on doing a lot of biking and hiking. The first problem I ran into was loading maps.
Summary: I have used a Garmin GPS in my car for years and thought the product worked well so when looking for a GPS for hiking I went right to Garmin. They have a wide variety of products and it appears that they know what they are doing. I could not have been more wrong in my deduction. I received the unit three days ago and I have not been able to use it since receiving it.I live just outside Washington DC so I ordered the mid-atlantic 24K map at a nice price (for Garmin) of...
Summary: My main purpose of purchase in this Hand held GPS is back country trekking use. So, I choose Topo U.S 100K map(DVD-Rom) bundle version. (regular unit will not come with it) also get 1GB micro SD card for expandable memory. Overall; Durable with all weather, Accurate (9ft to 15ft pointing in most weather condition), super last long battery life (about 30 hour constant use, which almost two time last longer than any other hand held GPS in today's market) Geocache friendly...
Summary: I bought think unit several months ago. On a fishing trip back in September 2008, it all of a sudden stopped getting signal. I contacted Garmin support when I got home and followed their instructions to fix the problem. It still didn't work. I called customer support again, and they told me to send the unit in for repairs. I had to pay the shipping.
Summary: I bought this unit as a Christmas 2007 present for my husband. He is trying to use it during his hikes in the Taos mountains. Unit freezes up every 15 minutes or less. Information lost. Updating the software had no effect on the problem. The internet is replete with descriptions of similar problems with this unit and there are no patches for it; unit must be replaced. I am very disappointed.
