Summary: I bought this gps to find my way through the woods between known waypoints. While studying up on these devices I decided that I also wanted the barometric altimeter and the electronic compass. This was the best value gps that I found with these features. I am very happy with the unit's performance and features. I use this strictly for off road and do not plan on using it for road navigation so I cannot comment on that capability.
Summary: The product is really all what I expected. I am very pleased with the purchase and simple to operate it. Usually use it for mountain biking and I believe that the device is ideal for mixed use on road and off road.
Summary: Although the discription was of the newer model of vista (cx, or one with a color screen)was not correct, from the picture I could see it was not the right description so I was not supprised by the Item I recieved. The price was right and I am happy with the vista gps I recieved. The etrex line of gps recievers have been a solid line and will continue to be until they all turn to dust.
Summary: This GPS worked great for me most of the time. In the car or on the bike, it did everything I wanted with ease. But it doesn't hold a signal well under heavy tree cover. This was a big problem for me, since I'm a trail runner & backpacker, so I upgraded to the GPSMAP 60CSX. This problem isn't unique to the eTrex Vista, however; all the units with an internal antenna, even the new touch-screen Dakotas, have less than stellar reception.
Summary: I bought this GPS because it has many high quality features but was much cheaper than the newer models. I'm a novice to GPS and figured this GPS would do everything I needed and it does and then some! It can be used to outdoor adventuring, geocaching, or road and highway navigation and with the Micro SD card slot its simple as pie to switch between maps. The screen is very bright and has a good detail level. Battery life is phenomenal!
Summary: I use this for hiking, hunting, and driving and it works great. The reason I went with this model is the ability to upload different maps like topos, and highway. I have yet to find somewhere that my eTrex loses its location. The ease of use with the eTrex is great and the battery life has never been an issue. It is also nice that it uses just regular AA batteries.
Summary: Like: Nice 256-color TFT technology produces a bright, sunlight-readable display. Longer battery life for more hours of outdoor enjoyment. Waterproof to IPX7 standards. Dislike: The WAAS-enabled eTrex Vista CX uses up to 12 satellites. It took about 10 minutes to locate satellites at first, but after that it is pretty quick. In city between high building GPS receiver lost signal. The Vista Cx is non expandable with a new microSD HC memory card.
