A great way to get into geocaching and personal navigation
10 March 2013
Summary: For the price I paid on Ebay, I thought it was a good deal. The ease of use ... well simple things work out well, but it has taken me some research and more than the Garmin Manual to figure out things like importing way points. All that said, it is a great way to get started with handhelds, I am learning the hobby of Geocaching, as well as recording my outdoor travels and it has been great for that
The BEST Handheld GPS Unit on the market for GEOCACHING or Weekend Hikes
9 November 2012
Summary: Simply THE BEST handheld GPS on the market for the money. Inexpensive, easy to use. The most widely used GPS unit for GEOCACHING. As a result geocaching downloads from GEOCACH.com are compatible. It has 24K of onboard memory (not expandable) but enough to download 5 or 6 detailed local USGS topological maps. Battery life about 18 to 19 hours. You'll want to get alkaline AA batteries and a charger.
Summary: I've only had this GPS for a couple of weeks so there is no way I can speculate on the long-term reliability/durability of the product. All I can say is that it works great for what I wanted it for - Geocaching. The maps included with the unit are rudimentary at best but for Geocaching, that was not a concern. I download the waypoint and follow the arrow. Hey, Presto! Do your homework to make sure this device will meet your needs!
Summary: We bought this unit as neophyte geocachers and it does work effortlessly. Having puchased a cheaper Garmin model prior to this, we were frustrated since it didn't have the features required to effectively find caches. We've been downloading the cache sites from geocaching.com and, for the few times we've used it thus far, it brings us right to the spot.
Summary: Well, I must say I am impressed. The communication with the seller was excellent and they were very agreeable. My Etrex arived without a hitch and started up with no headache at all. It took about 3 minutes to get a signal (it was a cold start and was expected). Now when I am outside the satilite acquisition process takes a top of one minute (usually within 30 seconds) My satilite reception it often +- 15 ft and my geocaching is now much better that I can rely on my GPS...
Summary: Works great even in heavy tree growth and in pocket. Very fast satellite reception and very easy to use. Works splendid with Google Earth. Using MacBook Pro and having no problems using Garmin Base Camp and WebUpdater. Display and battery life are great. Highly recommend.
Summary: I purchased this unit because I had a freind that needed one for Geocaching. I have used this type of unit when giving classes for the Game and Fish and found it to be easy to use and dependable. I have always used Garmin products and like their other products the eTrex is solid and dependable. It is also very compact and will allow for downloads of other mapsource products. Neat little unit.
Garmin eTrex Venture great for beginning geocacher
10 June 2010
Summary: The Garmin eTrex Venture HC provides all the tools we need for geocaching. The large color screen, easy-read compass and compact size make it useful but not too bulky. It's easy to input the coordinates and view which direction to go and how much time will be needed or miles to go. It seems to be accurate - usually within 16 feet of a cache. Other tools may come in handy as we become more experienced, but this GPS seems to fit our beginner needs.
Summary: The Venture HC is great. Its easy to use and it is pretty accurate. The H in the HC means high sensitivity chip. This wont make it any more accurate but it will help you still receive a signal under tree cover. If this unit is in your price range but the Vista is not then get it. Otherwise upgrade to the vista as it has better battery life and you can get the removable memory. For me it was at the right price and has enough features for me.
