W. Sharp "A guy who buys alot of stuff online", Amazon
25 September 2012
Summary: Bought this thinking it would be helpful for hiking and driving, it turns out that the maps are not very detailed and if you want to use this for travel you have to buy additional maps right out the box. It looks cool, but its not very user friendly, it now sits in a box, My cell phone navigation is much more effective.
Summary: I bought this to replace a nice 60Csx that I lost overboard. The description on Amazon said that it was great for navigating on the water. Then, when I finally got it, I found out that their definition of navigating "on the water" means a very few inland lakes that you have to buy software for. Amazon also states that it is fully compatible with all BlueNav etc. Well, it isn't compatible with any of it.
Summary: Bought this unit to replace an old Magellan that had been purchased years back with topo maps as part of the deal. Reading the reviews and description of this Garmin eTrex Summit HC lead me to believe that you would be able to use the included "Trip and Waypoint Manager" for hiking. Trust me the included base map is an absolute joke. Yeah it will show an interstate highway but much beyond that is just hype.
very poor installation process for Garmin software

Summary: I'm still trying to install the "Trip & Waypoint Manager" software that comes with this unit. The installation of the software required that I first read the manual, which required, in the middle of installation, that I download Adobe Acrobat Reader. The Adobe Reader installation required that I restart the computer, which caused the computer to lose its place in the "Trip & Waypoint Manager" software installation.
Summary: i was really disappointed with this product.the mapping that comes with it is very poor, not even showing the main A roads near to us. the maps that you are then forced to buy are incredibly expensive. it is not compatible with other digital mapping systems. we sent it back for a refund. if you are planning to buy this product, i would suggest you do your research, including how much it will cost you to make it useful to you with suitable mapping.
Summary: I'm on my second Summit HC, the first one going back as faulty as would only track for a short time before crashing and the replacement isn't much better, just going for slightly longer periods between crashes. It's not even immediately obvious that it's crashed because the display just stops updating - potentially dangerous if you're depending on it, and just very annoying if you were hoping to have a nice trail to view on Google Earth (or similar) after your walk/bike...
