Summary: I've owned this little unit for about 5 years now. It has traveled all over the country, and never let me down. Pros: - Lightweight - Compact - Long battery life (12 hours continuous track recording or 20 hours location reporting) - Standard AA battery platform - High visibility yellow (likely to be...
Summary: I bought the Garmin eTrex H mainly for hiking. It picks up satellite signals fast, usually in less than 45 seconds in open areas, with ten to eleven satellite signals. The accuracy is about 10 to 15 feet.
Summary: My main consideration in making this purchase was the low price offered on sale. I was aware that this was an older model of GPS receiver and did not offer maps on the screen. I use paper maps and a compass and have a strong memory for details I have studied before venturing afield.
Summary: Great tool usable worldwide to locate where you are and download it to your PC afterwards. Very useful for "rough" survey of roads, homes, villages, other landmarks. Just "mark" where you are, and then plot it onto your background map once you're home (you'll need the MapSource CD - $89 or so (new))...
Summary: The only thing you can't do with this unit is load maps of existing hikes or terrain. If you are looking for a starter unit that will keep you from getting lost in a new city, in a foreign place, or on a hike this is it.
Summary: I just purchased an Etrex H and brought it home. Unlike another reviewer, mine was able to lock onto the satellites in less than five minutes (I was indoors, too). I've tested it out some, and it performed well. It doesn't have maps, color graphics, or any of those features.
Summary: For finding your position in the outdoors this unit works very well. It is small and light so you can carry it climbing and backpacking without a problem. The accuracy is good and the unit easy to learn.
Summary: I purchased this GPS so that I could start geocaching and I couldn't be happier. I found a straight-to-usb data cable on eBay for $10, which is a whole lot less than buying the official serial cable and usb converter cable.
Summary: This is a first for me. I spent a lot of time researching various Brands and models of hand held GPS. It really comes down to "What am "I" going to use it for. The answer was pretty simple, all I want to do, at this time anyway, is store info so I can get back to a particular spot on a lake or in a...
Summary: As a kayak/angler, this very very affordable Garmin eTrex hand held GPS is terrific. A good waterproof map and the eTrex provide me with all I need to navigate through the 10,000 Islands and inshore waters of Southwest Florida without getting hopelessly lost.
