Summary: Probably the best bike computer on the market. I have previously owned Garmin's 305, and 510, and now the 1000. Each one gets better. All my GPS toys ( I have 12) are Garmin. I personally feel overall they make the best GPS products. But then to be fair Garmin is all I have ever owned. The transfer if data from the 1000 to the Garmin App is flawless with no problems.
Beleive all the bad reviews....its not just nit picking this thing is junk!

Summary: PURE JUNK! shame on you Garmin! Got mine an hour ago and its in the box going back after I type this. EVEN THE USB PORT DIDNT WORK! come on! forget the software issues....the USB port would only connect if I held it just right and not just with their usb cable but any one. I own a Edge 800 and 500 and neither ever had any problems. Once I finally got it to connect and I downloaded 2.30 firmware guess what....it said it could not apply the update!!!!
Summary: More software bugs than I can count! Maps look like they were designed in the 90s. Super slow responsiveness. Battery tops out at 5 hours when tracking a course. Really, this thing costs as much as an iPhone or a top of the line Android phone, but has hardware/software that makes one feel nostalgic.
Summary: My expectation was that if I use cycling map, and bicycle activity profile that Edge 1000 will find the shortest bicycle path from point A to B. However it finds shortest path on normal road used by cars. For that I can use my existing car GPS. It is possible that I do not know how to do the settings but I asked Garmin and never got any response. Therefore low rating. Also search is flaky, it will not find the street when I am on cycle map.
Start up guide was a joke so I printed the on line manual which was just a longer but just as bad guide ( no real help)

Summary: I read the positive and the very negative reviews...unfortunately the negative ones were dead on. Start up guide was a joke so I printed the on line manual which was just a longer but just as bad guide ( no real help). Other reviews led me to go online at Garmin site for software updates that fixed a few but not close to all issues. Hard to believe units still being shipped with known to be out of date software with built in bugs requiring two software updates.
Summary: I have used this for only 1 ride so far and I love it. This replaced an Edge 800 and the screen on the 1000 is so much more readable than the 800. I bought this originally because it interfaces with the Shimano Di2 shifter but I find I like most everything I have tried on this unit. It's good that it comes with it's own out-front mount because it does not fit in the same up-front mount the 800 fits in. The screen and body are too big for the old mount.
Summary: So if your thinking about getting this and plan on using it on a trip somewhere you will be unable to do so none of the City Nav cards for foreign countries will work in this unit. Garmin web sight says they are compatible but they will not read in this unit. The recent firmware update did nothing to change this. Going to be sending my unit back to Garmin for a refund until bugs are worked out. This simply is not worth 500 for a basic bike computer.
Summary: Such a great GPS and computer! I really like this Garmin 1000. I upgraded from the 800 & skipped the 810. The larger screen is so nice to use and easier to see everything and even more on your training pages. The resolution is better the what I had been used to, so I love it. I don't need iPhone type retina display for a bike computer. I'm not reading emails or watching video on this thing.
