Decent unit but could use some work

K. Peterson, Amazon
7 May 2012
  • Summary: I've had my Colorado for years now and it's seen all kinds of terrain/usages. The unit itself has held up very well, the screen is a little scratched however it's pretty resistant (we often drag it across rocks while hiking and it's taken a tumble or two out of our Jeep). The scroll wheel has some dirt in it but still works almost like new. As for software; We use this unit primarily for geocaching and it works pretty good with the recent updates.

  • Summary: Good reception, good backlight, easy to use, bad on batteries. I put two brand new energizer max in yesterday and usedthe gps for ~4hours total through the day. This morning, batteries were worn out. Buying additional topo maps can get expensive, but you can use google earth instead if u know how.

GOOD FOR TREKKING - USELESS FOR CAR OR BIKE NAVIGATION

cberetti, Ebay

  • Summary: The Colorado 300 is excellent for trekking or autdoor activity. I like the "rock 'n roll" control, much easyer than a touchscreen expecially when you are on the snow and you are wearing gloves. Very poor is the software for road navigation. Is impossible to use it as a tom tom becuase the system malfunction when you set for a route of more than 50 km.

Colorado 300

vonniemcb219, Ebay
14 May 2010
  • Summary: I like that it holds more then a 1000 caches but when you get to about 1800 depending on what is written on the logs I notice it starts to act odd. The print is a little small which is understandable because it picks up everything on the cache page. I like that it will post the last 5 logs that was written. All and all it's a good unit. Bought this one as a backup to my other Colorado 300 and 60mapCSX. Which is also a very good unit.

Garmin Colorado 300 Handheld GPS Receiver

Indyarcher, Hunting & Fishing Gear

  • Conclusion: The Colorado 300 was a good upgrade for me. It works every day, on my job, getting me to new places, finding faster routes than I can think of and finds detours easily. During fishing season I use it to set my trolling speed of my outboard motor. During scouting and hunting season I sit and map likely stand areas on my computer then scout, eyeball, and mark waypoints for trees I want to try hunting from.
  • Pros: After using this unit for over a year I can say that it has been very reliable for me. I can get updates for the base software from Garmin's website (after registering unit) until the unit is no longer supported. No extra fee. The DVD's routable mapping software does work great. Exterior controls are simple and work well. The ambidextrose thumb wheel, on top, works well for information entry and is a vast improvement over my Legend's click stick. The internal memory o...
  • Cons: Petty grievances I have with the unit are that it will eat regular alkaline batteries in short order. Also, any saved "bread crumb" tracks cannot be deleted by a menu driven deletion. I need to use a computer and find the track file to delete it. I need to be really careful not to delete something important. The electronic compass works well but is only two axis, so keep it level you must. Last, when you plug in the unit to a computer's USB port it turns the gps funct...
