The Garmin aera 550 GPS features a 4.3-inch QVGA wide-format touchscreen and pre-loaded graphical mapping. The aera 550 supports a higher-resolution 9 arc-second graphical display that provides over 11 times more onscreen resolution than the standard 30 arc-second versions on the 500s. GPS updating is at 5 Hz rate, and the aera 550 comes fully preloaded with Garmin SafeTaxi® charts for over 950 U.S. airports, an included AOPA Airport Directory database that gives users detailed listings, phone numbers, facilities and fuel location information on over 7,400 U.S. landing sites, as well as airports of entry for Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean. It is also covered by a full year of prepaid database updates. The unit’s graphical Terrain page offers both overhead and vertical profile views of the topography flown over, and an IFR map mode that lets users display and navigate on high or low enroute airways. It also features MEAs (Minimum Enroute Altitudes) and distances between intersections which can be accessed by touching the airway on the map. The unit comes with an optional power/data cable that allows users to connect the aera 550 to a Garmin GTX 330 Mode S transponder in an aircraft, and lets them access and display TIS traffic alerts in busy terminal airspace.
