The dual-duty Garmin aera 510 GPS provides users with transition from flying to motoring – by combining moving-map display features with intuitive, menu-driven touchscreen control. The unit features a 4.3-inch QVGA wide-format touchscreen and pre-loaded graphical mapping. The 510 supports NEXRAD imaging and XM WX™ satellite weather capabilities, and allows users to use the XM Radio capability to enjoy 170+ channels of digital music, news and other programming through headset or cabin audio system. The aera 510 also comes preloaded with detailed aerial mapping of terrain contours and structural features. In aviation mode, the aera 510’s chart-style shaded mapping and extensive terrain and aviation databases helps users visualize their flight path to nearby navaids, terrain, SUAs, obstructions, and so on. It also includes private airports and heliports that provides more navigation and emergency “nearest” options. A database-driven terrain advisory feature that offers TAWS-like color coding and pop-up alerts when there are possible obstructions or ground proximity conflicts loom ahead. The unit’s graphical Terrain page offers both overhead and vertical profile views of the topography flown over, and an IFR map mode that lets users display and navigate on high or low enroute airways. It also features MEAs (Minimum Enroute Altitudes) and distances between intersections which can be accessed by touching the airway on the map. GPS updating is provided at a 5 Hz rate, and the unit comes with an an optional power/data cable that allows users to connect the aera 510 to a Garmin GTX 330 Mode S transponder in an aircraft, and lets them access and display TIS traffic alerts in busy terminal airspace.
