Delorme PN GPS System and Mapping Programs are great for creatinng Maps
13 June 2012
Summary: I upgraded from the PN-20 and am very pleased with the PN-40 GPS, the Delorme Products work well when generating usable maps for hunting and fishing. Delorme offers a large range of both GPS Units and Mapping Programs.
Summary: I read reviews, I read reviews , I read reviews, and they were right. This is a very good gps, the maps are better than what comes on garmin ect. It does take some reading and figuring, but you can just let it calibrate ,push mark, and go, then push reverse and go back. It is a little bigger than the etrex type but it has a good screen and pans and maps as you push the button.More features than you might need ,but for the price I paid better than you can ask and you get...
Amazing unit for price. Slight Learning curve. Overall Excellent!!

Summary: Only reason it gets a 4/5 is simply because this is NOT a beginners GPS unit. This is my third one and definately the most complicated. I've continually upgraded through the ranks, but I believe that the PN-40 will serve every need I'll ever have! I did my homework and researched reviews and specs, very happy with the purchase. To those considering The Delorme PN-40, be sure you read reviews and understand that it does have a slight learning curve.
Summary: Bought this unit for geocaching. Have had this since April. Most complicated thing I've ever had. User guide not much help. Batteries don't last long; even rechargeables. Our $50.00 geomate is better than this. The only thing easy about it is downloading caches from the internet. Not worth the money.
Summary: I have not had enough time to load my own maps, which would make the device much more useful. I use it on my boat and I can say that it works well for that. It tracks my path and allows me to re-trace my "steps". It also shows me my MPH, heading, etc. Battery life is not the best, so carry an extra set of batteries with you.
Summary: I've been using my Blackberry Smartphone with the Trimble app for Geocaching. Being new to geocaching and to GPS', I found the combination to work quite well. The app costs about $6/month. I thought I'd try something more sophisticated to see if it was "better" than my Smartphone. Reviews for the PN-40 were pretty good so I bought one. It's certainly not for the beginner. I'm a retired EE and am quite computer literate. The instruction manual is poorly written.
Summary: We are using this device for geocaching and it works extremely well. It is difficult at times to navigate thru the pages to get to where you need to be. Great little unit otherwise and I would highly recommmend it!!
This is the first GPS I have owned so having nothing…

Excerpt: This is the first GPS I have owned so having nothing to compare it to. I truly love this device. I have to agree with the other reviews that the unit is big and clunky and a bit goofy to navigate at first but once I got the hang of it I found it rather easy to use. I mainly only use my unit as a tracking and navigating source for backpacking trips which it performs flawlessly for.
Summary: This GPS is easy to use, has simple button features and sits well in your hand. It also works well with geocaching.com. However, because it is an older model there are a few geocaching.com features, such as pocket queries, that do not work unless you upgrade the firmware. I have not upgraded because I read there were issues. Overall, the unit works great and I would recommend it for any new geocachers.
