Summary: I like the fact that it is a GPS. I did not know much about the unit but needed something like this for backpacking. The price was good, but the item does not have a very good response and it is very slow. This GPS will get you out of the woods though. If I was offered this item again I would not buy it.
Summary: Good durable GPS for hiking, boating, and stuff like that. Not so good for the road, frequent battery changes are a pain too. I have never tried connecting the GPS to a laptop, but I feel that it would be good for navigating. Some people don't like the lack of vocal instructions, but I really like not having a backseat driver.
Summary: The Cobra GPS 1000 came with all the extra's that Magellen want want you to pay for. Magellen wants $100.00 for their street level maps and not enough memory in the unit to down load it. The Cobra came with a SD card and the street level map software.
Summary: Like large screen and ability to make font LARGE. Downside is serial port (9 pin) connection. I don't have a computer with one of those anymore! Adapter cable caused problems. Not really compatible with Windows XP: Win98 anyone?
Summary: I purchased the Cobra 1000 GPS unit after looking into the equipment features and it's capabilities in their product literature. However, after I received it I found that the computer interface was a serial connection and not a standard USB which was not mentioned in the product literature. In addition the Cobra solutions software also known as Streetfinder would not function properly on my computer nor would it download properly to the GPS unit.
Summary: ERRORS IN COBRA GPS MAPPING - My place of work, located on a dead-end, very narrow roadway, off the very END of this piece of Kansas Avenue, has been getting a LOT of unwanted truck traffic as a result of navigation errors in your Cobra GPS mapping database. We continue to document dates, times, truck numbers, trailer numbers and license plates of wayward drivers/loads coming down our road, and we are considering a lawsuit to recover for damages to our roadway (not...
Great price, inaccurate, inconvenience and hard to use

Summary: I rated it two stars for the price. There was a reason for the recent (Feb 2005) huge rebate. I have several GPS units and this is NOT one of the better ones. I brought it because it was cheap for a GPS unit and a great starter unit for my teenagers. The serial PC interface method is difficult to configure when using XP. MS XP does not auto detect this device. However, I brought a serial to USB adapter at Best Buy and this seems to work well.
The worst companies one could conceive buying from....

Summary: I also bought this piece of #@%*. It's innacurate, and the maps don't synch from the software. If you download your tracks, then they show up as being at least a half block out of synch with the PC software. The maps----yes very old. When I contacted Cobra to find out what updates there were of the maps, I was told that they would not be updating them at all---ever. I was told to contact Rand McNally....they said the same thing. So...you're #$@%ed!
