Summary: The GPS is a little slow when initiating, taking a couple of minutes on average. This is not a problem in a survival situation, of course. However, it appears to work around the world, having tested it in the US and Asia. Another plus is that it holds its memory while AAA batteries are changed. There is also a clear battery level indicator on the face of the GPS when it is 'on'.
Pros: small, lightweight, 2 AAA, reasonably accurate
Summary: While this product is not the most accurate available, for the price and size it will get you back to your starting point (although it may include a few short detours along the way). It can be worn around your neck and hidden in your shirt until you are ready to use it. Then mearly turn it back on and it will take you back to your pre set starting point. What could be simpler than that.
A backtrack Busnell personal locator for an hunter and mushrooms searcher
29 May 2010
Summary: I like very much to spend my free days among woods of my Country (northern of Italy) for hunting with my rest dog (spinone italiano) and for collect mushrooms (boletus edulis). When the fog or low clouds drop down in autumn, my Bushnell Backtrack is a precious help to go back at home.Even a mountain expert can fail in the fog, but with the Backtrak direction is assured.
Summary: This was a little bigger than I pictured, about as big around as a tumbler, but very light. Simple to use, you do have to wait for a GPS fix sometimes for over a minute, so turn it on before you need to mark your position. But gives you bearing and range to 3 destinations very accurately and it's backlit. My 8-yr-old daughter tracked us back from the store with no problems except auto turn-off when you don't expect it. I'm using it instead of my Garmin for simple stuff.
Summary: small, cheap, useful Getting back at the end of the day is as easy as pushing a button and following an arrow. Utilizing GPS technology in its most basic format, BackTrack has only two buttons and stores up to three locations – just mark it and forget it until it’s time to return. At the end of the day, select your location and the BackTrack displays direction and distance to travel.
Summary: I thought I was getting a personal GPS device, because the description indicated this unit could get you to certain GPS coordinates. In actuality, this device is really a nice digital compass, which can get you back to a location that you click, when you are about to leave it. It does use GPS, but you cannot specify/enter coordinates.
