Summary: they try to sell you features. meh, don't need them. most people probably don't. There are easy to follow guides for setting up things like port forwarding on this so don't be afraid of the methodology of the configuration as this is a solid router.
Pros: Highly configurable once you understand the object oriented method of configuration. The cpu has a fan, but see cons. It provides local DNS. (faster browser resolves) It can provide multiple lans. This saves me having 2 routers.
Cons: The cpu fan is a little cheap and I would rather it ran 24/7 and kept the unit cool vs. saving that tiny amount of power. Seriously, you need to shut that dinky fan off why??? I list this as a con because I like my equipment to last a long time. I removed mine from its case and mounted it vertica...
Probably the best firewall router for small businesses
Wade B., Newegg
31 May 2015
Summary: If you don't want a separate wireless access point and need a firewall router, this is your best choice.
Pros: Lots of settings means lots of customization. If you need two subnets, need them to be separated from each other, and need different restrictions to each subnet, this is the device for you. Third party router firmware, like DD-WRT, just can't compare for all those features.
Cons: Lots of settings means lots of complication. Be prepared to study, research, and test. And each test requires a restart which requires 4 minutes of wait until it reboots. Also, sometimes the device just stops working. You'll have to unplug it for a long time, as in several hours, before it will s...
Summary: My thoughts were to create my own VPN service for my mobile devices, but I never got around to using the VPN software. Basically, I had this device configured such that my home WiFi network and 1000 Mbit ethernet networks were kept separated from each other (I'm paranoid).
Pros: multiple VLANS, a DMZ... a real networking device priced for the home and SMB poweruser! High throughput so I wasn't bottlenecking my TimeWarner cable internet service.
Cons: Difficult to configure for complex services (like XBOX Live), but it is a fully featured router, so YMMV. The bigger issue for me is the WAN port died after just 2 1/2 years... a few months after the two year warranty expired. Of course, that's my luck. If any of the other ports had died, I could...
Summary: Maybe all VPN routers are difficult to configure, but this one seem to take it to another level. Get the TheGreenBow IPSec client VPN software to help debug.
Pros: A host of possible configurations to handle many different consumer and small business situations. Bought two for two different locations and established VPN to join networks from both locations.
Cons: Extremely difficult to configure and hours reading Zyxel knowledge base articles, u-tube self help and email help desk. The manual that comes with the device is next to useless and is more like a dictionary that covers every radio button in the gui. Initial setup was easy and could get internet w...
I picked up another router for about the same money that was able to perform better filtering and reporting
FordCraftsmanStudios "4thstooge", Amazon
16 March 2015
Summary: Sent it back. Does what it's supposed to do but for the money, you would expect to be able to apply more filtering rules and restrictions. I'm a networking professional and used to working with more full featured commercial grade products so I have high expectations.
Summary: Don't hesitate to contact support for questions. They are based in southern California and I was really happy with contacting their support, asking questions, and seeing just how helpful they would/could be.
Pros: This device has a ton of features at a very low price. It will do site-to-site VPN, as well as browser-based VPN. It is absurdly flexible and loaded with a ton of features. VLANs, granular routing, flexible management, all is here at a great price.
Cons: The interface is extremely complex. It takes a while to learn. But again, very flexible, and once you get over the learning curve, it is a great deal.
Summary: Tech support seems very busy. On hold for a long time and email questions often take two days for an answer.
Pros: Inexpensive, seems high quality construction, fast, interface is well laid out
Cons: Difficult documentation to find things. Simple tasks are often difficult to perform. The interface is quirky in that if it does not like something it seems to freeze up. This may or may not cause a crash. For instance to change the IP address of the first LAN zone (lan1), if you are plugged into ...
Pros: For the price you cant beat the control you have of the this, not to mention the option for a 32GB USB drive you can attach and use as a NAS. The GUI interface is fantastic for any and all controls, words cannot describe how great of a product this is.
Summary: This is a pretty good router/firewall, and very very configurable. Unfortunately you can never get help from their technical support group. I have asked about a specific feature that is impossible to decode in the manual and other resources (QOS settings for VOIP) and I've received back nothing...
