Works but requires registration

Randall R., Newegg
18 November 2014
  • Summary: Watchguard needs to revisit their "non-functional-until-subscribed" hardware set-up. I understand firmware is not free to create and would be willing to consider subscriptions - but the forced (and buggy) set-up is unappealing.
  • Pros: Strong firewall with multiple LANs possible. With basic internet address info for your ISP, you can have one port open with DHCP within minutes. But be sure to create a Watchguard account FIRST (see cons) or you will add an hour of work.
  • Cons: Online documentation is not written for a beginner and little is provided in the package (you need internet to get the manual). You absolutely MUST register for the free 90 day LiveSecurity trial or the device is limited to only ONE output port. Getting the key installed for the subscription is t...

Look at cost of ownership

John H., Newegg
21 June 2014
  • Summary: Not for SMBs as advertised. Lots of free and or cheaper options out there which are just as easy to use (if not easier).
  • Pros: Features are nice, but...
  • Cons: Live Support for security patches and general updates costs upwards of $250/yr when most vendors provide these for free (as its not the customers fault the bugs exist, not to mention vendors hold clients hostage to threats like Heartbleed and other zero days if not current). Additionally, you hav...

  • Summary: This is a reliable device that works. I have several watch guard products this being the smallest. I am switching all of my clients over to these firewalls.
  • Pros: Does everything I want and more. This device provides security for several of my clients and is extremely easy to configure. I have several using the VPN feature and it always amazes me how easy it is to build each tunnel. I have several servers and multiple VPNs with VOIP, SQL, and several robus...
  • Cons: I have not found anything I did not like yet.

Most reliable firewall/router with multiple features

26 January 2014
  • Summary: This is a great product which you can trust will work!
  • Pros: Lightweight, 5 Ports so you can use a few different physical WAN ports if necessary, VPN operability between other WatchGuard products, wall mountable in all 4 directions (however the XTM 25-W comes with an additional piece to leave room between the wall and the firewall for maximum airflow), run...
  • Cons: Not from NewEgg, but I have purchase about 20+ of these over the years, and every once in a while I will receive a DOA. Haven't had to replace this through NewEgg, but NewEgg has a great RMA policy and I've never had an issue with RMA with the manufacturer as well.

Watchguard XTM-25

Dallas C., Newegg
24 August 2013
  • Summary: Because of the activation issue, I will probably never purchase another of their routers. I refuse to be held hostage so that they can try to push other pay for add-ons.
  • Pros: Great for VPN. This router will allow extra features needed with some VPN circuits. Fair price for capability. Routers of equivalent capabilities will cost closer to $800~$1000.
  • Cons: You do need to be expert at networking to use this product. You cannot get to the Internet with this router until you go through an activation process. I find this ridiculous and cumbersome and also frustrating. I bought the router, so why does Watchguard make me jump through extra steps just to ...

Strong and Reliable

SCOTT W., Newegg
24 April 2013
  • Summary: Like the con states above, don't buy this device if you do not have a very good knowledge of networking. Small changes can have wide affects on it's operation. So you have to know what you are doing.
  • Pros: This is a very secure device that I've found to be extremely reliable. I use this for retail chains, and use the public wifi ability a lot, which works fantastically.
  • Cons: Not for the novice or even intermediate admin...

Buggy and Unreliable

Mark R., Newegg
17 April 2013
  • Summary: It's an extremely poor situation when not only a product doesn't meet its specs but its up to the consumer to fight the battle and prove it. This was an extremely difficult thing for me, a person with over a dozen years of experience in software and networking; would it be possible for someone...
  • Pros: After two years of problems it is hard to think of any
  • Cons: My business runs on an internal client server application; we have 12 clients, 1 SQL server, 1 application server. We also have 10 VOIP phones with an offsite VOIP provider. The specs of this device are impressive however far from accurate. I had a lesser model which couldn't handle the traffic a...
