Pros: As NewEgg doesn't have (or I couldn't find it anyway) a method to update your review I'm submitting a new one. Netgear released a MAJOR firmware upgrade. They went from the 1.x.x-x series to 3.x.x-x series and WOW what an improvement. The unit is stable, responsive and throughput has increased all the while adding new features. I have not used all of the features of this unit, but as a content filtering gateway for a SOHO it works very well. I'm revising my recommenda...
Cons: Netgear's interface is still ugly, but this isn't a beauty contest. Finding where things are in the layers upon layers of menus/pages can be a challenge as it isn't always intuitive. Once you learn how things are organized in the Netgear world it becomes easier as there is consistency across devices.
Summary: Web based management interface is s l o w. Navigation design could use some work- on some screens its not obvious how to cancel and return to the last screen because the only two buttons are "Apply" and "Reset" on the page.
Pros: Just the right amount of configuration options for the home office. Plugged it in and was online within minutes, then spent an hour or two drilling into all of the configuration options to see what was available. Those with an intermediate understanding of network and firewall terminology will have no problem finding their way around the web-based UI and configuring the device to meet their needs.
Cons: Significantly noticeable hit on performance when scanning HTML content. Business class service gets me 61Mbps down- when HTTP content filtering is turned on, speed drops by almost half!
Pros: Malware, intrusion, etc security appears to be excellent. SSL VPN works; email scanning good; content blocking controls simple/good. Good value with gigabit wan and lan. Nice visual with dashboard that summarizes threats blocked. Noticed significant decrease in volume of spam being sent to users after installing (I think this is due to web content blocking).
Cons: Interface is laggy and "old school-ish". Inbound filtering/forwarding options not as sophisticated as my DIR-655 at home! Noticable, but tolerable lag in email downloads (imap/pop3) due to scanning. Speedtest.net shows that download speeds dropped from approx 6.9 mb/s to 5.8 mb/s.
